Maybe you should write a letter to the editor of your local nespaper about the fish markets and the lack of fresh seafood in your area and suggest that they do a story on its decline. You'd have a better chance of getting an answer to your question than from people living in other parts of the country or the world.

Salsailsa,

Most everything comes into Chicago, fifty some miles away. But for some reason it does not get out here to us. What ever happened to the old fish markets? I can't find one around here, and in the past there were several.

Does your airport have frequent flights coming in from either coast?? Winnipeg is in the center of Canada and you can get good fresh fish and we have some of the best sushi restaurants in the country.

Where I live in Brandon- two hours west of Winnipeg, you can't get any fresh fish unless you catch it yourself in one of the nearby lakes. The simple explaination is no commercial airport.

There is a great little retail market here called the Seafood Center and I have found they have more variety, fish is just as fresh as anything I can get in Myrtle Beach, SC for visits. BTW, here is Madison, WI

Fruit stays fresh for just a tad longer than fish. Fish begins to spoil the moment it leaves the sea or lake. But I'm sure you knew that. Except for commercial distributors and those restaurants and fish markets that buy their fish direct and fly it in each day it is impossible to get fish that hasn't begun to go bad in supermarkets. Remember, this: The supermarket chain has everything shipped to a distribution center in a particlar area. It is then shipped to the individual stores. If you plan to buy fish smell it first. It it smells like fish, forget it. After smelling it, touch it. If your finger leaves an indentation, don't buy it.

Actually, it does. Fruits and vegetables will last several days in a refrigerated truck and not be the worse for wear. Trust me, you don't want to eat fish that was in a refrigerated truck for a few days before it got to your store, where it could also sit for a few days before being purchased.

The speed at which fish deteriorates mandates that it be shipped long distances by air. Perhaps merchants have found that midwesterners don't want to pay the inflated prices of seafood that has been transported by air from the coasts. Fish is not cheap on the coasts, but I would hate to see what it would cost after being shipped to the midwest by air.

Thak you for the great information, I will be checking out many of them. Sorry, in Chicago, you can still get great fresh sea food, but not in my home town, Valparaiso, Indiana.

Plitt is the major supplier but I'm sure there are others on Fulton Street. With 2 major airports, it's no big deal to get fresh fish in Chicago area, look how many restaurants and sushi places offer it.

I know fresh is better but, I have some land locked seafood tips.

Cooked frozen shrimp, you can eat it with coctail sauce of make some good pasta dishes. My favorite is a butter and garlic pasta sauce with frozen green peas, real easy to make. My grogery will cajun stam frozen uncooked shrimp. I eat that hot outa tha steamer. I wouldn't trade those steamed shrimp for any shrimp dish I have ever had anywhere. I also make gumbo with frozen shrimp.

Oysters, boiled or smoked, both come in a can. I make all kinds of dips and soups with the boiled oysters, even an Oysters Rockafeller. I do all kinds of crazy stuff with those smoked delights. Thers a whole thread here about those. Hmm, I think I started it?

Just the tip of the iceburg for "not fresh" seafood stuff. It's endless the things you can do.

You can't find real fresh sea food in your area because you don't know the source. The Plitt Company from Chicago distributes fresh sea food in your area. Find out who they service in your area and the day they take delivery. In Chicago(Wheeling, IL), Bob Chinn's Restaurant serves fresh fish daily. Fish sold at retail food stores is already old when it hits the shelves. Better to buy frozen over fresh or visit www.plittcompany.com

Look at the bright side, you have POPCORN! I kind of know how you feel. I have great seafood all around me but none RIGHT here. Even with Cedar Key so close, there is nothing outstanding about their restaurants in my opinion. Small portions, overpriced.

Never order sushi in Nebraska......

For the Holiday season, a friend wanted to send one of those Lobster-Grams as a gift. I suggested that lobster is one item that is accessible and reasonably priced throughout the nation. Here. I pay about $9.99 for a chicken lobster (under 1 1/2 lbs). Clams are well priced too.
What is the price for lobster elsewhere?

Last time I was in Iowa we went to an excellent restaurant. Only fish offerings were salmon (farm raised YUCK!) and tilapia (also farm raised). We all ordered steaks or Iowa pork chops. Stick to the coasts....or ALASKA!......for really beautiful, fresh fish and shellfish.

Chicago has a fair amount of good seafood places, as well as some excellent sushi. But there is nothing like the fresh caught stuff on the coasts.

Umm I don't mean to come off as trying to be sarcastic or anything like that but I think the reason that we in the midwest (I am from Iowa), don't have very good seafood is because, well, we dont have a sea.

The seafood around here usually is frozen. I can't really imagine wanting to get fresh, as in never frozen, seafood where I am unless I see it living first. It is quite a trip from the ocean to here.

I don't eat much seafood anyway. I eat beef. And Iowa has goood beef.

Saturday, I went to a place in my area, that I was told had good Sea Food, and had the grouper, $ 18.00, but if good, not too much. But this was bad, cold, and may not have even been grouper. I don't mind paying for a good meal, but this was not. This was in my own home town of Valparaiso, Indiana.
Where in my area, is great Sea Food?
