If so, who serves the best and why, and where are they located?

I don't know about Poland, but many Poles, including me, love Ma Baensch's herring on a saltine. Ma's cannery is on Prospect Avenue, a little south of North Avenue in Milwaukee, WI. Don't get the white sauce, at least I never do.

Seriously, When I was in the Marine Corps, a lot of us ODed on soba served off trucks. A small slice of beef, a lot of those little noodles, and beef broth was a great substiute meal. Sort of a Japanese hot dog as it was good, simple, portable, and cheap. I don't know if they made anything else, though. I'll be sure to check that out next time I watch the Cubs <s>lose</s>.

Yano, that's one of the neat things about Chicago. You can get food from just about anywhere, sometimes with a distinctive Chicago flair, like Chicago Style Pizza, but it's all good, even if it's not all good to me.

RE: Chicago Japanese (Matsuya) (cheesybellybutton)

I used to live right down the street from Matsuya and I can proudly say it became a habit. Hatsuhana and the place owned a beer company are expensive and not so good. There is a very good family style place just north of the river that was our standard when I worked for Itochu, Intl.

Polish food? Cabbage in everything and lots of vodka.

RE: Chicago Japanese (Matsuya) (CajunKing)

Zataar -

I didn't know grilled TROLL was polish food

RE: Chicago Japanese (Matsuya) (CajunKing)

Danimal - Thanks I will be making a quick trip to chicago this weekend, sounds like a great place to grab a bite.

I have passed by there several times and wanted to stop but could never find the time, hopefully I can make time on this trip.

RE: Chicago Japanese (Matsuya) (zataar)

quote:

BUT POLISH FOOD RULES!

No, it doesn't.

It's one thing to post Polish recipes on the Polish food thread, but how about knocking off the hijacks on other threads? The next time we're in the area, we'll have to give it a try. Last year, the Shogun Japanese restaurant opened in downtown Racine. They have a wonderful sushi bar, as well as the hibachi grill tables. The place is packed for weekday lunches and weekend evenings. FYI, I'm back selling hot dogs & Polish on Saturday's. We're located at the Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee in the Brewer's Hill neighborhood on the Milwaukee river. We vend for the Saturday tours. The tours are for families too. Your kids will love the home made root beer. Visit the Hot Dog forum for details and e-mail me if you decide to take the trip. I want to be sure I'm there and not subject you to another Jake's incident. Jake's is less than 10 minutes from our location and you could always get some corned beef and a rye bread to go. OTOH, the sometimes close early on Saturday's because they sell out of product.

CSD

RE: Chicago Japanese (Matsuya) (danimal15)

quote:

Thanks for the post! That price for your meals sounds great! Even here in Kansas City, $10.25 isn't out of the ordinary.
Does Matsuya have tonkatsu and other bento meals? My favorite food in Japanese places here are the combinations that include soup, salad, entree, rice, vegetables and tempura or california rolls. It's always a bargain and wonderful food.
Chicago is on my list of travels in the near future. The kids enjoyed their usual Japanese dinners of miso soup and rice and udon noodles. My wife and I ordered combinations, and though the price has risen somewhat in the three years since we were last there, it still qualifies as one of the great bargains on Chicago's North Side. For $10.25, you get miso soup, rice a combination plate of beef and chicken teriyaki and veggie and seafood tempura, and a bowl of ice cream. The food quality is almost as good as some of the more expensive Japanese places, though one complaint is the fat on the chicken (it's easily peeled off, however).

We didn't try any of the sushi, but local reviewers who've tried it call it the best in town. The only bad thing about the restaurant is lack of parking, but someone must have been watching over us, because amid all the hoopla of St. Patrick's Day being celebrated somewhat rambunctiously at nearby bars and out on the street, we found a metered space just around the corner. Can't count on that every time, though.
