I thought I remembered that, too, but the referenced article says "In July, market officials announced that Olivieri would not get a new lease and that his spot would be offered to Tony Luke, a South Philadelphia restaurateur who has made a national reputation with his roast pork sandwiches." It would be something if the market association was trying to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Perhaps the owner of DiNic's sided with Mr. Olivieri once too often?

This is still a fascinating, and sad, story.

I believe I recall reading when this controversy first popped up that the deal was for the Tony Luke's in the Terminal to only sell cheesesteaks so that they wouldn't cut into DiNic's roast pork business.

The lastest article I read on this last night indicated that management gave official notice to Rick in writing that he's no longer entitled to be there, but he isn't budging. So management is saying they're going to follow legal protocol and I assume have him evicted at some point in the near future unless he can get a judge to block it.

I did stop by. Rick's was still there and serving cheesesteaks to a fairly big crowd of customers. There were a few reporters and a security guard or two there as well.
I guess either Rick was able to get a stay from a judge or the Terminal management just doesn't want to cause a scene during business hours and will deal with it later tonight.

This may be coming to a head today. I heard on the local news radio station this morning that Terminal management is saying that if Rick's people show up for work and open as usual, they'll still proceed with eviction proceedings. I'm going to stop by there on my way to work in a few minutes to see what's going on.

It could be an unfortunate precedent. What happens when Sarcone's says to RTM they'd be interested in moving in? Give Salumeria and Carmin's the boot too? Kick out Old City and replace them with Starbucks? Metropolitan- your bread is a little to crusty for the tourists, Wonder Bread is taking your place...

The story I read indicated that both Rick and some of his fellow Terminal merchants feel he's being kicked out as payback for his aggressive advocacy for the merchants in his capacity as head of their association when it was time for contract renewal. The Terminal's management responds that it's got nothing to do with that and that they want Tony Luke because he's gained a national reputation in recent years.

I am a big fan of Tony Luke's, but I certainly don't like what is happening to Rick's. There has to be a lot more to this story. I would very curious to find out more.

What a shame. I've never eaten there but I remember that they've have been at the RT even back when the place was a dump with leaky roof and no a/c. To bring Tony Luke in is just plain wrong.

I read the ongoing saga on egullet. I prefer Tony Luke's to Rick's but I think it's pretty shabby treatment for a vendor who has been in the RTM for 25 years.

I just noticed a report on the Philadelphia Inquirer's site that indicates that the management of the Reading Terminal Market has informed Rick Olivieri of Rick's Steaks that he must be out by the end of the month and that his space will be taken by Tony Luke's.

According to the article, Rick is looking into legal avenues to prevent this from happening; so it may not be a done deal yet.
