To me eating a sandwich out of a wrapper is one my many pet peeves. I don't know why, but seeing people doing this just bugs me.

They do have a different taste because when they are in the paper the moisture is kept inside. If you travel any distance you swear that the burger got soggy and sloppy. This is especially true with hot dogs. Some of the specialized paper have an aluminum backing which seals in more moisture. Like putting roasted peppers in a paper bag.

I always enjoyed a nice greasy cheeseburger wrapped in a piece of food wrap paper, either wax coated or plain wrap paper. The burger always seemed a bit more moist, warm, and greasy, just the way I prefer one. There's nothing better than eating the excess melted cheese off that wrap. A Kewpee's double cheeseburger is always better wrapped, than eaten off a plate.

I always thought hamburgers taste better when served on matte finish (non-shiny) pressed cardboard plates; the grey colored ones. I think maybe because that is a Depression era thing and any business that still survives from that time period is probably a damn good burger.

I agree. Maybe it's the "steaming" effect. In pre-McDonalds days, I used to buy a sack of 12-cent burgers wrapped in hamburger-paper at a place called Steer-In on Rt22 around the GreenBrook/Plainfield (NJ) area. Poor quality meat, dehydrated onions, and a cheap roll. Even with the munchies, they weren't great but, I needed "budget" sustenance for the ride back to Flemington. I did it enough times to learn that they tasted better the longer they "steamed". So, I always ~~ate~~ wolfed-down the fries first to give the 1st one time to finish "cooking".

Helps with the structural integrity of the burger so you don't lose too much gushy stuff.
