Don't forget the brandy option.

My Dad used to whip up store-bought egg nog in the blender with some booze (bourbon, brandy or "rye" aka blended) and serve it in small cups with a dusting of nutmeg. It was actually very good, and not like drinking melted ice cream as the straight store egg nog usually is. It's better if you can find a brand without the rum flavoring.

The best egg nog I ever had, though, was a home made recipe we did in college. I remember that the egg yolks, booze and sugar rested in the fridge for a few hours or overnight before mixing with beaten egg whites, lightly whipped cream, and I'm not sure what else. The booze component was: bourbon, brandy and rum! We had a very successful holiday party that year.

RE: Egg Nog and Liquor (enginecapt)

quote:

If you find yourself in a patriotic and/or adventurous mood, you could try this recipe from George Washington. pb

http://cooking.cdkitchen.com/TheCompetentCook/195.html

I feel tipsy just reading that recipe.

RE: Egg Nog and Liquor (mland520)

Southern Comfort is good in nog and just a small sprinkle of nutmeg- no whipped cream- tha's all the decoration they should need.

RE: Egg Nog and Liquor (porkbeaks)

If you find yourself in a patriotic and/or adventurous mood, you could try this recipe from George Washington. pb

http://cooking.cdkitchen.com/TheCompetentCook/195.html

RE: Egg Nog and Liquor (BarbaraCt)

We make eggnog every year, and have discovered that 1 liquor doesn't do it. You need 3. We got our recipe from the Mr. Boston deluxe official Bartender's guide. They have several eggnog recipes, but the "Baltimore egg nog" is the best.

1 quart prepared dairy eggnog
5 oz brandy
5 oz Jamaica Rum
5 oz Madeira wine

That is it and it is excellent. Madeira is not expensive, and lasts forever. We have used the same Madeira for a couple of years. You could reduce this a bit to try it, but believe me, you will like it. We always make this recipe, and keep it in the refrigerator for drop in guests, (and us). I would put this in all caps, it is that good, but I won't.

RE: Egg Nog and Liquor (BhamBabe)

quote:

My Southern Grandmothers always used bourbon.

I use bourbon too. Traditionally topped or served with toast to sop it up with.

Wassailing is the tradition of going door to door singing and requesting wassail in return. Though they also did wassailing back in the middle ages to bless a harvest or to pray for a good harvest. They would hang a piece of sopped toast in the trees and 'awake' the trees to scare away evil spirits.

Many make cider for their Wassail but it's not in keeping with the original. Unless you use hard cider of course, then all is forgiven.

Personally, I hated it...ugh, gag. But I'm not fond of beer, ale, wine or hard cider.

RE: Egg Nog and Liquor (enginecapt)

My Southern Grandmothers always used bourbon.

RE: Egg Nog and Liquor (wheregreggeats.com)

How about Wassils ...
