I think there is a difference or either my taste buds have changed. I think that they're more waxy tasting and the twinkies aren't as soft with little flavor.

I think the old hostess cupcakes had more bite to them...more solid in feel...now they're looser and the flavor is definitely less intense!!

I guess it is all about the profits. They change the formula and replace ingredients with cheaper substitutes and/or longer shelf life, regardless of the changes in taste or concern for the consumer's health.

I remember the cupcakes and twinkies having this fine texture and being tender and soft, and pretty tasty. My dad sold them in his little grocery store. Somehow I remember the unsold ones being taken off the shelves a lot quicker and replaced with a fresh supply, unlike the old joke that a twinkie contains so much preservatives it lasts forever.

Offlady, regarding JuicyFruit gum...noticed it's also a bright yellow color? Not that dull gray color like before. I refuse to chew that gum now ...it's horrible.

As for Hostess cupcakes, it's funny i saw this thread because just this weekend my aunt(she's about 45 y/o or so) told me that they don't taste the same as before. Makes me wonder how much better they used to be when I think they're great now!

I still don't know what to do with these Hostess coupons. Two coupons good for up to $4 of Hostess products. Is there anything Hostess makes that is still good?

I agree with nthe Little Debbies people. For the money(and not much at that) they're quite tasty! How do they do it at that price...and others can't?

One of the ingredients is beef fat. Was that there in the 70's?

The crumb cakes do not taste the same as they did in the 70's when I would get them for a treat sometimes on Sundays.

I bought a pack of Juicyfruit gum recently for old times sake. It has been decades since the last time I had them. They just didn't taste the same. When I checked the list of ingredients, they had replaced most of the sugar with aspartame...YUCK!

I have to say Hostess cupcakes, and Twinkies don't seem as good as when I was ten. But then, we thought jujubes and juicyfuits were the greatest candy back then -

They aren't the same. Ingredients have changed. Many of the ingredients listed were not around years ago when we used to eat them.

I was totally disappointed at the new banana twinkies. I used to LOVE the old banana twinkies. I got so excited when I saw the new ones, but found out later that all they did was add artificial banana flavoring to the cream filling. The old ones used to have real bananas in the cake and it had a very fine texture, and more tender than the regular ones. I was so disappointed I wrote them a letter and they responded with some coupons. Today I almost purchased a box of cupcaks with the coupons. Good thing I didn't. Maybe I will try the cinnamon cakes? Has anyone tried them recently?

Cupcakes weren't the same. Twinkies are, as are the fruit pies. I miss Ding Dongs.

Don't know about the cupcakes, but the Hostess fruit pies are still excellent, I get them day old at the Hostess thrift store and they are still stay fresh for weeks after in the fridge.

I would imagine today's Hostess baked goods have a larger percentage of artificial stuff in them than the ones you remembered as a kid.

Hi,
Tried a Hostess cupcake the other day...a rarity for this diebetic...but wow they don't taste like I remember them when they were baked by the Continental Baking co. Texture seemed wrong...smaller...and my memory remembers them as tasting better...am i wrong...any ol timers done a taste test?
