Stay away from single malts from Islay. You may find yourself more pleased with Highland single malts.

I love Bourbon, and probably smack through a bottle's worth per week, but single malt scotches have a much wider breadth of flavors. Bourbons are all fairly close in taste compared to Scotch single malts. So, don't judge all Scotch by an Islaly.

, also, do not like the heavy peat, and prefer Speyside, Highlands and some of the Islands Scotches (subregion of the Highlands - such as Highland Park.)

That GOUT is some nasty stuff!!!! I usally get it in my ankels but have had it in my wrists one time in my right knee my knee swelled up like a cantalope they drained it then tested fluid and said you got gout....if I get a attack they put me on a predizone burst its gone in a day or 2.
I've had alot of broken bones(x motocross racer and thrill seeker) and would rather have a broken bone than a severe gout attack.

unabashed. I started suffering from gout circa 1980 when I was only 38. The first attack was in the arch of my foot and I thought it was a stress fracture because it felt just like when I broke my foot once. But when the pain did not subside I knew it was something else. It got so bad I went vegetarian for 7 years. I'm not sure what is going on with my body but the gout has pretty much disappeared on me for the past few years. The last attack was in 2005 and it was mild. About that time I had artho surgery on my knee and they scraped out a lot of Tofi and at the same time removed a golf ball size chunk of tofi from my right elbow. I now wonder if that was related. I'm no longer taking allopurinol. I used to dread the holidays because it came on like clock work. Knocking on wood because I know how painful it can be.

hands down I love my Bourbon...
I have 4 bottles at the moment all open...
Makers Mark , Knob Creek in the fridge I like them strait but chilled without the water the ice brings to the party
Evan Williams & Ezra Brooks I like mixing with coke and ice My cheaper version of the Black Tooth Grin Dime enjoyed so much.
all and somewhere in this post someone stated not drinking beer cause of a ailment .... I suffer from both forms of Gout but I loved my beer a Dr. told me "Ron I know your not gonna stop drinking but beer is a major factor in these attacks....he said if you must drink drink Bourbon....I take allopurinol for it and still get the attacks around holidays HAM & VENISON are the culprits....
anyone that suffers from Gout email me if you need any info on this I've suffered with it since 1995 and it is a awful disease I've researched the crap out of it...
now I'm gonna do a shot of Knob Creek and mix a chaser

Use a rocks glass if you have it instead of the shot glasses, then add a dash of spring water to each.

You will be suprised at how the water opens the flavors up.

That and it gives you another way to test them on another COLD Night.

The testing is continuing. Tonight it is sipping alternatively between the two instead of one after another.

I guess I still have to go with the bourbon even though the Wild Turkey is not nearly as smooth as a Maker's Mark or Knob Creek. Or I could go out and buy Lagavullen and continue the test.

Scotch it is. I love Scotch - perfection is a shot of Scotch over 'fresh' ice cubes. When I am enjoying Scotch I get a fresh glass and fresh ice cubes for each drink.

I don't like any mixers i.e., Dew, etc.

Bourbon is not my friend.

I always tended to feel that scotch tasted like antifreeze. However a few years ago a relative from the UK brought me a bottle of single malt scotch whisky. Wow, what a difference! I might be hooked.

I also like Grey Goose vodka even though most things French aren't in my favor.

Between those two, I will take Bourbon. I got my dad a single barrel Blanton's for Christmas and it was outstanding. But the tougher choice for me would be between a good Irish Whiskey and Bourbon. Maybe I need to do my own taste test on a cold night.

I can still buy Fowler's apple cider (from NY, probably will end mid-Feb) at Central Market down here, so I like mixing Bourbon (I mostly buy Buffalo Trace since it's become available here) with real cider.

As a cocktail, I mostly order a scotch with a slight splash of water (usually Dewars). At home, I will usually keep some Famous Grouse Gold Reserve, and some Dewars. For single malts, I mostly buy Old Pultaney these days, simply because I think it's the best for the price. I'm not a rich man.

In a bar I will also order a Stoli martini; I like it shaken, up with olives. (I also insist on some Vermouth. Most of the young bartenders don't put in Vermouth, but they always ask if I want it dirty...)

At home, I keep a bottle of Tangueray's Sterling Vodka in the freezer.
Throw in about 1 part Martini & Rossi's vermouth, 3 or 4 parts Sterling, and 3 jalapeno-stuffed olives on a toothpick, and you have a perfect pre-dinner drink.

I do not know if this is true or not, but I read it somewhere. The reason that they started to blend Scotch in the first place was that single malts did not taste good.

I have a bottle of Chivas Regal Royal Salute - 21 yrs old and a bottle of 18 yr old MacCallan sitting on my shelf right now

So my choice..... Scotch

This all started because I got a gift book for Christmas from my daughter, Single Malt Scotch by Bill Milne (photos) and Roddy Martine (text). The photos are stunning. Important things you need to know. Single malt scotch is aged in used barrels that were originally used for aging bourbon or sherry. Scotch in Scotland is whisky without the e. All other spirits are whiskey with the e.

I was never able to develop anything but distaste for Scotch whisky. It always reminded me of some bad-tasting medicine I'd never had. (And yes, I've had single malts that have been described to me as extraordinary.) My standard drink is Jack Daniels Black Label sour mash. I don't even know if they still make the younger, raw-tasting Green Label any longer. I've been drinking the Black Label since 1954.

I'll second Greg's comment about tasting scot's whiskey again in the morning. Jack Daniels does that to me as well.

Hi All... I was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease (an intolerance to gluten, from wheat, barley and rye). I was thrilled to learn that the proteins in gluten do NOT transfer to the final product in alcoholic spirits, thus allowing me to continue enjoying bourbon whiskey. Beer is out, but Anheuser-Busch makes a gluten-free beer that tastes pretty good and is quite refreshing. All this to add my vote for BOURBON. Thanks for your indulgence.

Myself, I kind of prefer Scotch, but I can usually still taste it in the morning ... and that is not a treat.

Bourbon is also nice for sippin' and doesn't deliver the same indignity.

I also find myself taking a well crafted beer from time to time.
