I think it was in the 80s. The hero is an Italian
waiter in a ritzy restaurant in Switzerland. He is treated terribly
but must endure to feed his family back home. If you can find it you will
laugh and cry and want to see it again. I remember the scene where he has
to peel an orange in one piece, it is epic. A great movie.

And then there was the baked bean dinner in Blazing Saddles--nothing epic
there, but a very funny movie by Mel Brooks, so how could it not be funny.

RE: Food in films (Diner-Lover)

Did anyone see "Babette's Feast"?
Here's some info on this great movie (it won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092603/
I highly recommend it for all the food scenes, and it made me cry.

I loved all the food references in "Fargo"-- Took the edge off all the violence and foul language!
Marge Gunderson: "Oh, I just think I'm gonna barf... Well, that passed. Now I'm hungry again."

"Raising Arizona", another Coen Brothers movie had a lot of food in it, too. Mr. D-L and I particularly like the scene where John Goodman's character, Gale Snoats, is eating a fried chicken leg and he tells H.I. McDunnough (Nicholas Cage), "You gotta use your head, H.I." as he touches his head with the chicken.

Some food scenes from "Annie Hall":

Alvy Singer: "Annie, there's a big lobster behind the refrigerator. I can't get it out. This thing's heavy. Maybe if I put a little dish of butter sauce here with a nutcracker, it will run out the other side."

The split screen of Annie's "WASP" family eating a holiday dinner and Alvy's Jewish family eating theirs. And Alvy and Annie's first date at a NY deli where Annie orders pastrami on white bread with mayonnaise, tomatoes, and lettuce.

Other movies I've seen and enjoyed have already been mentioned: Big Night, Diner, Goodfellas, and 2001 name a few where I particularly remember the food.

RE: Food in films (FutileGourmet)

Honorable Mentions:

Clue – Christopher Lloyd slurping his soup.

Galaxy Quest – When the 'crew members' are served their favorite meals by the aliens.
