W/pineapples. I think the native Hawaiian interest in Spam goes to what they call "Cargo Culture", wherein we ran around in DC3s, etc, dropping "cargo" all over the Pacific. With parachutes. Maybe not so much Hawaii, but Guam, New Guinea, places like that. I AM NOT calling the recipients dumb, OK? Please nobody get on my case about that, let's stop that before it starts, but I do think it's interesting that these folks thought we were aliens, or gods, or something, flying around dropping "cargo" for them.
-Scott Lindgren

RE: Indio Tamale Festival (PapaJoe8)

Lots of great tamale ideas Salin!

How about Tamale Tamales, or tomalley tamales?, made with that other kind of tamale, or tomalley.

Oh, Hawaiian tamales, those are made w/ Spam.

And, don't forget the South American tamales, made w/ bananna leaves.
Joe

RE: Indio Tamale Festival (ayersian)

quote:

Confusion reigns when one has to decide if LA is Los Angeles or Louisiana...or USC is in Los Angeles or South Carolina????? Oh, dear, I guess I did not see ann's wink. I was thinking too hard about Hello Kitty. Anyway, I was talking to a guy from Mexico today about this Tamale Fest, and he says he's traveled ALL over Mexico, and there are HUNDREDS of different types. It's funny that the LOS ANGELES (!) TIMES piece mentioned Strawberry Tamales, and this guy Raul just brought that subject up out of the blue! Now, that I want to test out. How about blueberry tamales? Sounds good to me. I really love the green corn tamales in the summer at El Cholo here in LOS ANGELES (!). Those are practically dessert. Raul says you can pretty much put anything in there. I can see that. How about say, a pizza tamale, with chopped salami and mozzarella? Or a nice pesto tamale, with basil (duh), garlic, parmesan, and toasted pine nuts? If you're gonna go as far as strawberry, well, hmm... How about adding Mexican chocolate? Like in moles? Or you could do a ratatouille (sp?) version, with zucchini and everything. I won't even approach Asian additions, I don't know enough about that subject. Oh, the mind reels here. A Soul Food tamale, with black-eyed peas and stuff. Hawaiian tamales. Swedish meatball tamales. And wait... What about adding booze? Champagne tamales. Single malt scotch tamales. Tamales with beer. I'll quit now.
-Scott Lindgren

RE: Indio Tamale Festival (EdSails)

Jennifer, I have broken bread with you----but I have to admit that your jokes are worse than mine!

RE: Indio Tamale Festival (Jennifer_4)

how about chili today, hot tamale?

RE: Indio Tamale Festival (EdSails)

quote:

quote:

Ohh Ed, didn't know. But I reference the "LA Times". Most folks would know this means Los Angeles, not Louisiana. I say it's 26 miles east of Palm Springs. I tell folks to look up Indio, CA on Wikipedia. I mention the "Indio Int'l Tamale Festival", THEY HAVE A WEB SITE. How much further must I go to avoid confusion?? Really. I can't believe what I'm hearing here about confusion. Good God. What part of "26 miles east of Palm Springs" is unclear? annpeeples says she "has no idea what it is about, and just wants an explanation". It would help avoid confusion or "duh?" questions, if you would be sure to include the area you are referring to when you list someplace. Putting it near but not in Palm Springs helps ! Confusion reigns when one has to decide if LA is Los Angeles or Louisiana...or USC is in Los Angeles or South Carolina????? You get the idea! Thanks

I have never been to the Tamale festival, but would like to go sometime...I Have been to the Date Festival, several times, and loved it. If you can visualize your Grandmother in a "I Dream of Jeannie" Hareum outfit..Hundreds of senior citizens dress in those outfits and serve as the fair's "Staff" The gentlemen all look like retiree's from one of the Shriner's Organizations....Pastel leisure suits and vests and Fez-type hats. ALL with LARGE NAME TAGS ! The fair really is fun, Ostrich and Camel racing, more food than I have seen at many county fairs, and always great weather. It is also the Riverside County Fair, so the events include stuff other than Date-related happenings.

Here's a Link to the festival website It just happens to be running this coming week !!!!!!!

http://www.datefest.org/

RE: Indio Tamale Festival (salindgren)

Si.
