Mushy isn't a word that describes it at all. I took their pizza home and ate on it as leftovers for a couple of days.

Ok, they are probably inconsistent. That describes an awful lot of small eateries.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (RKB)

donw9876

NYPIzzaNut

That it is! Made the trip again today, with our lunchbunch group, to try out Jimmy's Italian Kitchen at 3002 Woodman Drive in Kettering. Jimmy is a brother of Troni's owner but Jimmy's pizza is terrible - the crust is mushy and tasteless. Their sausage rolls and antipasto salad were fairly good.

They are about a half mile from Troni's and I picked up a takeout pizza from the Troni's on the way back (which as usual was excellent).

NYPizzaNut made this post on 3/8/2008.

We ate at Jimmy's this last weekend. I have to disagree about the pizza. It's not in any way mushy and it had a decent char. Perhaps they reformed in the last four years. The pie was not terribly different from Troni's.

The reason we went here instead of Troni's was service. Troni's is OK but the service can be spotty.

The server was on all of our requests without making a PITA of himself, and service was fast and friendly. My wife had lobster ravioli that she was really happy with and which I liked.
Overall the experience and service were both excellent.

This place has a strong everyday neighborhood spot vibe. It's not fancy or cutting edge. The parmesan is the powdered stuff, the Caesar dressing is bottled, and they don't put real anchovies on your Caesar salad. It's pretty middle of the road in that respect. Still, it's far better than chains.

I tried Jimmy's pizza last week, and had a different result. IMHO no way is it in the same class as Troni's, nor is it similar in any way. The one I had was much as NYPN described his, mushy crust and generally bland. About like Pizza Hut, to be honest.
The service was indeed better than Troni's on average, but I don't go to a pizzeria for service, I go for the food.
YMMV.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (donw9876)

  Stone House Tavern, Waynesville

http://www.facebook.com/shtavern

The main story about this new place in Waynesville is that they are the one joint in town that can now serve alcoholic beverages.

You can miss this place easily driving by. The fabric banner sign that they have at the road is absolutely terrible to see at night and is virtually invisible: dark red letters on a black background.

The owners are the same team that own Archer's in Centerville.

The place was fairly quiet but service still took a pretty long time, both for the waitperson to come back around a second time, and to get the actual food once ordered.

Most of the stuff we got (a sandwich, a salad, some onion rings, slaw) was ok but forgettable. The french onion soup was made without any clue what french onion is supposed to be (some semi crunchy onions in warm, not hot beef broth with unmelted cheese on top). The waitperson was really nice and offered to heat up the soup - I didn't want it. She then offered a new side on the house, or dessert, and we chose the latter.

This restaurant has no pizzas (Archer's does.) That's the main difference in menus.

This place gets a "meh" rating. Not terrible but you can make better at home. I'd call the food here a bit of an afterthought.

Food wise I prefer the Hummel House (lunch only), Village Restaurant, or Bentino's for pizza. No beer at those places, though, and this place is set up like a sports tavern.

I suspect, given how closely this place is modeled on Archer's, that it's not growing pains - we received their best/normal product and service.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (donw9876)

NYPIzzaNut

That it is! It's quite standard Ohio region "wanna-be NY style", and the comments on the crust are dead-on. In that particular area, Flying Pizza is at the Normandy shopping center about 1.5 miles to the west and their freshly baked pie is a good pie and (IMO) is superior to Johnny's. Flying Pizza has its detractors but they are far more about the crust as a thing to be baked properly than the majority of Dayton area pizza joints.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (MiD)

Who's tried Johhny's Pizzeria in Centerville? Tried it for the first time today. Not too impressed. I LOVE Troni's (and CT (esp. We ate in. Pricing was a rip-off, the pizza was "eh" and the service was mediocre. I was glad to see them close.

In that general area the best pizza I know of is the Dorothy Lane Market deli at their Springboro location. It also says hand tossed not homemade. It appears to be a mass produced dough. I guess they toss it on the peel. Like most franchise places the quality is gone and it is all about price. Still very good: the stewed brisket on a bed of bok choy, steamed flounder, mala green beans. Anything off the specials whiteboard is worth a go, really. Prices are more reasonable than China Cottage, and they do a much better job on the steamed flounder, too. This has become the go-to Chinese place for family dinners.

House of Kebab
298 N Main St in Centerville
--I went here months ago, but loved it-- it's where Roc-a-Fellas used to be. The green bean appetizer was great, and I'm not even a big fan of green beans. I enjoyed my lamb kofta. Both my husband and I were saddened when Taste of the Mediterranean near Dayton Mall closed, so we were happy to find a new Lebanese place.

Tik's Thai Grille
4459 State Route 725 in Bellbrook
-- I was pretty damn skeptical when my parents told me about a Thai restaurant in Bellbrook, but this place was great, with some of the best Thai curries I've had in the Dayton/Cincinnati area so far. Our favorites were the Massaman and the red curry, with duck. The Drunken Man Noodles were also delicious. Be warned that spicy means spicy here, though. We ordered a 3 on most dishes, I think. The papaya salad was good, but so hot that I'm getting pain flashbacks just remembering it. Not cheap, but Thai food never is, IME. Very friendly, warm service. I like it better than Siam Pad Thai in Kettering, and the bonus is that you're not crammed into your table like sardines.

I was happy to see that Mom's Restaurant (formerly in Red Lion) moved to its new place in Franklin just off I-75. The concept is modestly priced diner food, along with a few additional things that you wouldn't expect to find in a diner.

I think it opened in January. The building housed the former Nanking Inn, which in prehistory (pre-1980) was a beloved Burger Chef with one of the original gaudy neon kite shaped signs. But I digress.

Ate there tonight for the first time, 5/19/12, a warm Saturday evening. We got there around 7:30.

The first impressions were: new remodel job, nice seats and decor (along with the counter in exactly the same location as it was in Burger Chef days). And hotter than hell - easily low 80s in the dining room. The staff had a side door propped open with a chair. Today really needed A/C. And lastly - only two other patrons, two men at one other booth. On a Saturday around the dinner hour.

I ordered a patty melt platter for either $5.95 or $6.95 (I think), which includes chips and a soup of the day. My brother ordered the fried fish sandwich - same price and deal.

On the positive side, they allowed a free substitution of fries for chips. The soup of the day was - get this - cream of mushroom soup. Wtf? In the summer? The same stuff that you make green bean casserole with? Yup. They had no other choice (usually at places that serve a soup du jour, some kind of chili is always available.) We both passed, and substituted cold sides instead (applesauce and slaw.)

Our sammiches were a mixed bag. My brother's fish sandwich looked good, although the piece of fish was small for a restaurant meal and looked like a preformed frozen patty. My patty melt was made from a preformed Sysco type burger patty. I kept getting little bone chips in the meat, which I always associate with cheap discount burgers. The burger was served grey with no charring. The second half of the sandwich's bottom piece of bread was a soggy mass from sitting in its juices while I ate the first half. It was hard to eat because the texture was nasty, and the mushy bread combined with glutinous cheese and mushroom sauce was, in the words of an icon, . I left most of the second half on the plate. My stomach's still grumbling three hours later.

The waitress and the cash register guy were both super nice. I did not have the heart to tell either what I really thought.

I have to give this joint a D-. The only thing that raises it above an F is the great attitude of the waitress. The lack of A/C made it very uncomfortable to eat in. The preformed burger patty shows that they (management) doesn't care about quality. This is a diner that serves food that is not as good as fast food.

I deliberately picked food that I felt was very easy for a diner to make - so you are not seeing me bitch about poorly made clam linguini or other types of food that require actual food judgement and culinary knowledge to make well.

When we left about a quarter after 8, there were a few other patrons (4 to 6) that had trickled in. But the almost empty parking lot when we arrived on a weekend evening tells the story... At that rate they couldn't be making enough to keep the lights on.

In a ~1 mile radius of this place I HIGHLY recommend the following places instead, in order of preference: Tanks, Slider's, Angie's, or Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers. There is no reason to eat here, except that you can't find a seat at Slider's.

I want to support local businesses, but ... ech. Blink twice and you might miss this place before the building is up for lease again.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (donw9876)

Bonk
Fried chicken is a food with such a high popularity rating among all age groups and races that it's bizarre there are so few good places to get it in southwest Ohio.

Years ago (I think around 1990) I went with a friend from work to a franchising presentation by a spinoff of Subway ("Doctor's Associates") called Cajun Joe's. Several people in the audience pointed out that fried chicken doesn't do well around here.

I don't get it, either. I have a bare handful of places that I would eat fried chicken at locally.

Church's used to be great but they don't have many locations left. Popeye's is pretty good but individual units can be quite skanky. That leaves KFC, and KFC.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (Bonk)

Donw - I know what you're talking about. The breading is very inconsistent and the quality of the chicken itself is mediocre at best.

I keep wanting to give Lee's another chance, so I went to the one in Latonia, Ky. (yeah, I know this is a Dayton-area thread), and it was marginally better, but still nowhere near its previous standard.

Fried chicken is a food with such a high popularity rating among all age groups and races that it's bizarre there are so few good places to get it in southwest Ohio.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (donw9876)

The chicken from Lee's was like this: both pieces were poor quality meat - lots of fat and connective tissue. The drumstick was unevenly breaded. The thigh was breaded way too much, to the extent that it was very hard. It made Banquet fried chicken (quite nice for what it is) seem like haute cuisine.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (NYPIzzaNut)

That is the way I feel about Ihop.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (Bonk)

When I was a kid in the early 80s I used to visit Cincinnati and Lee's was outstanding. Sadly, it's been crap for years now and I'm surprised the remaining locations haven't shut down.

Few things are sadder that watching a great eatery go south.
RE: Where to eat in Dayton Ohio North of Middletown (donw9876)

  It's not roadfood, but...

Sunday night we tried Elsa's relatively new location on Wilmington.

We walked out after 20+ minutes after receiving only one drink order and apparently being forgotten. (my dining companion still had no drink after this time and the so called waitress was not to be found.)

The "salsa" tasted like jarred stuff. No trace of herbs and it had corn starch type thickness. The chips were store bought. In the menu - oh, look, a Mexican restaurant that serves Calzones!

Chalk up one more place to skip.

Then we went to Lee's across from Meier's. I got a biscuit with raw uncooked dough in the center, and the chicken was . There is a REASON why the Colonel has all the market share, even if he doesn't offer coupons for car trunks full of fried chicken.
