(The Travelin Man)

To be clear, I love the steak at Peter Luger's. But, if I never had another bite of that steak, I'd be OK. There are lots of places that make a great steak. On the other hand, if you told me that I could never have that burger again, then I would be disappointed.

pnwchef - I guess I have always called the salted roll the "pretzel" roll, but now that I am thinking about, maybe it is more like a kimmelwick roll - but shaped in a log. Honestly. I don't care what we decide to call it - I likes 'em!
RE: Peter Lugers? I'm not going to try the cheese burger, A 3000 mile journey by train, plane and automobile, deserves a Porterhouse Steak.
TM, my wife liked the salted bread stick/roll in the bread basket, was that the pretzel stick ?????????..........What's nice about Peter Lugers is, they know by the look in your eye, your ready to eat......We also go there right from the airport, it's a nice way to be welcomed to New York........pnwc
RE: Peter Lugers? God Bless America.

From the upper left - (a) Everyone knows you don't put the Luger steak sauce on the steaks, but adding a little to the burger is perfectly acceptable; (b) Luger's provides one of the best bread baskets in all the land. I am a particular fan of the onion roll (bottom) and the pretzel roll); (c) The Luger burger doesn't NEED much in the way of adornments, but you can't go wrong with their super thick-sliced bacon; (d) In my opinion, this is the best burger I have ever had. Period.

Tony Bad was kind enough to join me on this endeavour. I met up with Billyboy the following day, and between the two of us, there should be some pictures posted soon.
RE: Peter Lugers? For you beer fans, it's called Schaefer Landing because it is located where the Schaefer Brewery used to be on Kent Ave. At one time the walk would have been a dangerous endeavor, but now it is yuppie and hipster city and fairly safe.

http://www.nywaterway.com/ERF-Home.aspx
RE: Peter Lugers? (danimal15)

I went to Lugar's (the original location) for the first time last month, and it was quite an experience. I'm glad I finally got there. The steak was mouthwatering, juicy and flavorful, and there was plenty of it. The slicing thing annoys some people, but it seemed pretty natural. That's just the way they've always done it, so you expect it coming in.

The service was actually much better than I expected. We had a very friendly waiter who was extremely nice to my two boys (ages 12 and 8). The bill was high, but we expected that as well.

Basically, for me it was a once in a lifetime event, as I don't live in NYC and it's a bit of a pain to get over to Brooklyn from Manhattan, where I always stay when I'm in town. But I'd definitely recommend the place. And if you have time, take a quick walk around the neighborhood. It's a fascinating area.
RE: Peter Lugers? (SBXSTR)

I've long dreamed of a steak at PLs and had an opportunity to do so in early Dec last year. A business associate of my wife made a sale that my wife contributed significantly to and she treated us to dinner. Logistics (train from New Haven to GC and back) required a later afternoon reservation (4PM). The place was full at this hour. Staff was fine, not surly at all. We had the bacon and steak for three (medium rare) and fries and tomatoes. I have to admit being a little crestfallen as the steak was a disappointment. I can grill at home a choice local butcher market strip that tastes as good as PLs offering. No detectable beefy, dry aged funkiness. This was the strip side of the porterhouse, mind you. A week later a Ruth's Chris strip was far superior. I'll charge it up to an off instance and would not hesitate going there again, but ...
RE: Peter Lugers? However, when I ordered a burger rare at lunch, was served one well done, and sent it back, I got the dreaded " teach this guy a lesson, give it to him raw" experience . This is not, of course, uncommon, but one expects better here than the practices of a Longhorn Steak House.

RE: Peter Lugers?
