(MiamiDon)

It's expected, now. I surmise that, decades ago, Abe's Deli put a sign in its window stating that they had the largest pastrami sandwiches in NYC (maybe 1/2" thick). Then, Saul decided that he would outdo Abe, and made a sandwich with 1" of meat....

The rest is history.

I first encountered an oversized Jewish deli sandwich at Pumpernik's in Miami. But, being about 24, I had no trouble eating it in one sitting.

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? (John A)

It's been many years since I worked in Far Rockaway, NY. Back then there were no dairy products of any sort in the kosher deli's. A number of times I heard someone ask for milk or butter and those old guys waiting on tables would get really pissed and yell at them. But, when you sat down there was the best rye bread, sour pickles, and cole slaw in the world (At least I thought so) waiting for you.

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? (Robearjr)

Yes, Carnegie isn't a true Kosher Deli. If you go to 2nd avenue deli, you won't find any cheese.

There is a verse in Levitacus that forbids cooking a kid in its mother's milk. This has been interpreted to mean no mixing of dairy with meat. I think the prohibition lasts three hours, so you couldn't have a cheese plate for your first course and then a steak for the main course.

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? Most Kosher restaurants will serve EITHER meat or dairy - not both - you would have to know going in whether or not it is a meat or dairy establishment. Kashrut laws would dictate that meat and dairy be prepared completely separately from one another - even served on different dishes.

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? (Porcelina)

The other thing I don't get about Deli sandwiches - and my dad has taken me to what he described as two of the more revered ones in NYC - the Kosher thing. I get it, but I enjoy cheese on sandwiches. I would choose cheese and bread over meat and bread - but that is probably just me. I was unable to really put a dent in my sandwich and I felt a lot of the meat was for show. I mean, it gets to a point where it's ridiculous. My dad's a big eater and even he couldn't finish his pastrami sandwich. This is just my opinion though.

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? (billyboy)

I say, why not?

Tkitna, thanks for the reference to my pic. I took that last fall during my late night trip to Sarge's Deli in NYC. When I say late night, I ate that around 2:30 am. I was just coming off of a second shift and hadn't had dinner yet. My gf's brother had been telling me about this place for some time and had recommended the pastrami sandwich and fries. I ended up getting the sandwich pictures, fries and a NY egg cream. It was all very tasty and good. I only ate about 1/2 of the sandwich and had the rest for lunch the next day. It's a pretty common thing to see in the NY style deli (Sarges, Katz's, Carnegie Deli, Harold's NY Style Deli, etc...) Huge portions. Most people go in groups and order these and most of the food is priced to share. Take a look at the review for Harold's in Edison, NJ here of RF and look at the double and triple decker sandwiches. They'll put the one in the pic you posted to shame!! I've been to Harold's a few times and even saw a table with two petite ladies sharing a triple decker of pastrami, corned beef and brisket. What most places will give (or charge a dollar or two extra) for bread to go and people take most of it home to have during the week. Do a search here on the site, probably under sandwiches or delis and you'll find plenty of threads about Harold's, ad nauseum.

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? (BuddyRoadhouse)

I'm with you tkitna. I love my meat but there is such a thing as overload. When I go to Manny's here in Chicago, I will either split the sandwich with my dining companion, or if I'm alone, I will bring the other half home to Mrs. Roadhouse.

On the other hand, knowing how big a Manny's sandwich is, whenever I go to "conventional" sandwich shops that serve more reasonable quantities, I feel like I'm getting cheated, even when I know full well I could never eat much more than what is presented to me on the plate. Psychology is a funny, funny thing ain't it.

Buddy

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? (jettababs)

There's a fantastic deli near us that serves sandwiches that look like that. We've been known to split them between four people--we just order some extra bread, and they never seem to mind. Plus it frees up more room for desert, or a latke, or some sort of salad. We're smallish people--that sandwich would easily do for four of us, or for a few meals. Looks delicious, though. Might have to go over to that deli and pick up lunch (and dinner, and snack, and tomorrow's lunch) later.

RE: Deli Sandwiches,,,,,,,,,,,Why? (tkitna)

Ok, I admit that I have never been to one of the big, well know deli's, but I have to ask a question anyways. What do people do with these sandwiches? Do they take them home and feed their family of five with them? I mean, how much meat can one person actually eat? There's just no sense and putting that much meat on two puny slices of bread. I just cant understand it.

Has anybody really finished one of these in one sitting?
