It houses The Philly Way on the south, Caroline's Jazz Club on the corner in the middle and Soup Brothers on the west. I don't know how many people have a hard time finding the cheesesteak business; even people that drive by it every day. I've been there several times and it really is good. Charley's Grilled Subs are nothing I'd order again; generic franchise food. Chubby's I haven't been to.

RE: Onions on cheesesteak (Michael Hoffman)

quote:

Wow, lots of interesting ideas...

I don't know where I'd find a cheesesteak here in Madison/southern WI, but if I could I think I'd like it wit if the onions are chopped small and well cooked, otherwise witout. The owner, Dave London, is from Philadelphia and knows what makes a good cheesesteak. He uses Amoroso's rolls. He even has Tastykakes!

Try it - it's really a good cheesesteak. Let me know what you think.

And, there's Chubby's Cheesesteaks 2232 N. Oakland Ave. Milwaukee. Rolls made by a local baker. My sources tell me that Chubby's is pretty good. The essential elements are the meat, roll, and cheese in that order. I put those elements in that order because close to 50% of people in Philly order a steak sandwich and the other half order a cheesesteak.

If you like fried onions, then I wholeheartedly recommend doing so. There are those that order raw onions on their cheesesteaks or steak sandwiches.

Cheesesteaks are all about personal tastes. Whatever you like in that sandwich will become your preferred version.

RE: Onions on cheesesteak (mikez629)

It is a must!-but too many onions are a bad thing-I like chopped onions better than sliced-they don't pull out of the sandwich like sliced onions do.
