IMHO this is the best combo in the area and while you may be able to make a combo at home, I am sorry to say that you will not be able to come close to Johnnie,s. Many before you have tried and failed.

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (leethebard)

Thanks guys...will try this!!!!

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (ChiTownDiner)

or this - http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/search.asp?mode=DoIt

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (ChiTownDiner)

quote:

Thanks..anything on the beef?

Scala's sells it on that link above also.

Or try making it...several on Raodfood with the search button or try this - http://www.saveur.com/food/new-recipes/italian-beef-sandwiches-54022.html

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (leethebard)

Thanks..anything on the beef?

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (ChiTownDiner)

Four components - char grilled Italian sausage in your choice of hottness, good bun/roll - I prefer crisp outside and soft inside, not toasted - Italian beef - several recipes on Roadfood for making this - hot giardiniera, I'd go online and buy it. I'll check for a link.

We use Scala's.

http://www.iwanthotpeppers.com/q-shop/browse.asp?cat=45&path=45

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (leethebard)

Wow, you guys, live and learn...sorry I didn't know...I'm a Jersey guy...and though I've been all over, my only experience with Chicago is O'Hare! Boy is this a sandwich I need to try to duplicate..'til I get to Johnnie's...Any tips on how to do this???

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (ChiTownDiner)

That's he Combo with Hot meaning Italian Sausage topped with Italian Beef topped with hot peppers or hot giardiniera in this case. We were at Johnnies about 2 weeks ago and arrived on a Sunday at 11:45am. They open on Sunday's at noon. The line was about 20 deep and the smell/smoke from the sausages on the fire was intense. They use a wire rack device which holds 8-10 sausages and at least 3 racks were going when we entered. The smoke coming up the vent had the crowd licking their lips while in line. The only thing better is cooling things off with the Italian Ice - the best around.

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (wanderingjew)

quote:

Wow...just looked at today's photo of that Italian sausage sandwich topped with beef and hot peppers....Is that something else? Never had that combo..never saw it at a restaurant, never made it. Wouldn't have thought of it...but boy does it look good. I wonder if the beef has any sauce on it? Anyone ever had one of these...I also can't see putting any ketchup or condiment on this luscious looking creation!!!!

Why not go to Chicago and try one?

RE: Johnnie's Sausage Sandwich (firecommander3565)

leethebard,

Welcome to lunch...Chicagostyle!
