Yep, Coke & peanuts in the early 50's in NY and RC Cola & Moon pie in 59 in Texas (Lackland AFB).

I grew up in Mississippi, and in the 1950s when we went on vacation in the summer in our Plymouth, my dad would stop at a "filling station", buy a 5 cent bottle of Coke and a little bag of salted peanuts and put them in the bottle of Coke. He was good to drive another 3 or 4 hours then! I have even seen him sprinkle some salt in his bottle of Coke if he didn't have peanuts. I used to like to see it fizz!

I saw this and had to reply especially since the thread eneded on my birthday *L*
But I've been putting peanuts in my Dr. Pepper since I was little learned it from my Dad, who for part of his life grew up in South Texas down in the vally to be percise. It always suprises people especially when I worked as a desk clerk in hotels and they'd see my bottle of Dr. P and the peanuts floating in it. I have guests from the south ask me if I was raised in the south and I'd say No Sir/Mam learned it from my daddy who lived in Texas for a while.
My coworkers look at me strangely when I bring this in to staff meetings oh well I like it and I'm not stopping this practice.

I'm originally from W TN (Memphis & Halls), but left as a child. I ran into this when I returned to go to college at , where we had both in machines in my dorm. At that time (1962) there was only one size of Coke, & it was probably made with real sugar.

I did it in high school, Lance salted peanuts, GLASS bottled Pepsi. Barbara Mandrell comes to mind..(I was puttin' peanuts in my Coke....") We have a conveinence store that on occasion carries glass 10oz bottles of Coke, Pepsi, Thumbs Up(what is this?), you pay for them though, about $1.79. I treat myself on occasion with a bottle and a bag.

First time I saw this was when I was a kid and moved to western TN, and traditionally it was an RC Cola, but I knew folks who did it with Pepsi and Coke too.

Hello All,
Sonny, I used do this at my grandfather's general store
when I was 5, back in 1960. Peanuts worked well in
Pepsi, Coke, RC, Dr. Pepper and Double Cola. I never
saw anyone try it in a Mt. Dew or Seven-Up or Tru-Aid,
or Orange or Grape Crush soda.
I quit putting peanuts in soda once they switched from
bottles to cans.
And today, they don't put enough salt around the peanuts
to make it a good experience.

If my memory is correct, and of that fact I am not certain, there were two sizes of Coke bottles. For some reason the small bottles seemed to taste better (with or without peanuts).

It's still a good idea to do it these days. Though if you can find the kosher cokes I say it's better.
