(Ashphalt)

Amazing what you can find on the Net. Apparently Elsie's on the Cape is gone, but Elsie is still around.

http://www.city-data.com/forum/massachusetts/280703-elsies-cape.html

Also, reports on Wikipedia and elsewhere say the Harvard Square location is gone.

RE: a great sandwich 40 years ago - still around? (Ashphalt)

FCF, I wonder if that's related to Elsie's in Harvard Square? When I was a starving BU student in the late 70s they opened a location in Kenmore. Their signature was, indeed, a Roast Beef on a puffy kaiser with red onion and Russian and I recall lemonade. The quality was pretty poor, usually tasted like day-old supermarket deli beef, but it was cheap and filling, and as you say, even then the combination was a bit exotic.

On the web it looks as though they still have their location on Mt. Auburn St. in Harvard Square. I ate there once over ten years ago and it lived up to memory, poorly. Still cheap for the neighborhood, but a bit skimpy and stale.

Anyone eat at Elsie's in Cambridge more recently or know anything of the history?

RE: a great sandwich 40 years ago - still around? (acer2x)

Roast Beef, Corned Beef and Turkey "Specials" are commonly served in delis in the Philadelphia area and elsewhere, only they are served with cole slaw and Russian dressing on rye bread minus the onion.

a great sandwich 40 years ago - still around? (FriedClamFanatic)

When I was high schooler on Cape Cod, we had a place called Elsie's. She was a German lady from Cambridge Ma who ran a summer place in Falmouth. The highlight was a Roast Beef Special. It was about 1/3 lb+ of very thinly sliced Roast Beef (probably not the best grade, but tasty), served on a Kaiser Roll, topped off with a slice of Bermuda Onion and Russian Dressing. Accompanied with a glass of her great lemonade, it was heaven!

Back in the 60's menu choices were more limited and this was felt to be "exotic". Nowadays, there's lots of stuff to eat and various ethnic and different places, but I don't think I"ve ever seen something like this again. Anyone had something similar? and Where?
