my favorite sub place has been on my food rotation for about 16 years now. Its Augustino's in Carols Stream, IL. Other locations in West Chicago, IL. & I guess downtown Chicago I love their Italina sub with salami, capicola, mortadella, provolone, lettuce tomato, onion, and vinegar and oil. $4.29 for a 6-inch, and $7.59 for a 12-inch. The 12 inch is a load. I also like their croned beef and swiss sub.

Yonkers, NY...late 60's/early 70's

Landy Brothers was located in the Park Hill section of the city. This little hole in the wall would have a line outside it almost all day. Most people would order the Italian combo...ham, capi, salami, provolone with the works. The cold cuts were good, but the sandwich had a couple of other things going for it. The tomatoes were sliced really thin, good grainy mustard & a rich, flavorful Italian dressing doused them. But mostly it was the bread. The guys' uncle, cousin or some relative owned the commercial Italian bread bakery down the street. As a result, this place got 4 or more bread deliveries a day. When they ran low, they justed called down to the bakery & someone walked up another dozen loafs.

They're still making them after 50+ years at Steck's Deli at 325 US Highway 202/206 Bridgewater, NJ 08807 (908) 685-9587. They call them grinders and I believe it was one of the first "sub" type sandwiches I ever had. pb

Anyone remember the subs they used to have at K-Mart ? They were not too bad for the money as I recall.

The best were made at a rat infested hole in the wall convienence store that has been closed in my hometown for over 20 years. The were overstuffed, super fresh ingredients, and sprinkled with MSG!

These days the best I've had is probably Cassapullas in Claymont, DE. I've tried Cassapullas South in Rehoboth Beach twice now (driven 30 miles to get there) and it just doesn't compare to the original.

No pickles or lettuce on mine when I get it. Doesn't need it!

That picture makes the sub look small. Believe, it's not. There is also a lot of meat in them.

The main thing with this sub is not the size of the sub or the amount of meat. It's the taste and it's OMG Good!

Ya know I love a good sub,and I live in an area where great subs are all over...but my kids watch the teen channels where Subway is advertized. We were going to the beach and wanted to bring a cooler of food a drinks, and my daugter tells us about the $5 subs at subway..so although we have our favorite sub place that'll make a "belly-Buster" for about $10..my wife figured...four subs customized for each at $5 a pop,why not. I went to get them. Granted,not a lot of meat...but oh the choices of toppings.Most of us got "the works" everything they had...all kinds of peppers,olives,spinach(I asked for more) that the sandwich was hard to hold....very good....and loaded with healthier veggies...and at $5...OK!!! For a quicky lunch...it's cheaper than most FAST food...and I'll warrant,healthier...We still go to our great sub. place, but occasionally, what I call the loaded veggie sub(Not a lot of meat,remember...but enough,I guess),is fine!!

Ellen that's similar to the bread pal joey's uses, but pal joey's puts much more meat on the sandwich. It is out in the boonies, but if you are heading to Philly it's on the way. Just make sure to ask for extra vinegar if you really like vinegar on your sandwich.

Not yet; yeah, Pitman is out in the boonies... but I'll sure keep the place in mind!

Meanwhile, I live in a great "sub area".... the Tuna Subs at Dino's in Margate and at the Chelsea Pizza in K-Mart shopping center in Pleasantville , and also Vic's Subs in Absecon are both about as good as it gets!! (real creamy tuna, special "Atlantic City bread".

With regards to "My Hero" in Northridge, that bread with the sesame seeds DOES look real good!!

Then you've got that good PapaJake's cheesesteak place in Manhattan Beach, CA, right at the end of Rosecrans by the beach.
The owner spent lots of time at the Jersey shore growing up, and even uses the same Dino Subs "secret" Tuna recipe!!! (there's an article on the wall about it)

If you look closely, you will see that there is meat both on the top and bottom halves of the roll.

I do agree that it does not seem like a lot.

The best I've ever had? Simple. Charley Marchitto's mother made them in Marchitto's Grocery on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden, Connecticut. She'd cut a loaf of Italian bread in half, then open it lengthwise and remove excess crumb. Then she'd spread olive oil on both halves of the bread, add dried oregano, and then top it with Genoa salami, hot capicola, mortadella, provolone, roasted red peppers and briny chopped black olives. That sub, a lemon Frisbee pie and a bottle of Pepsi or X-Tra Cola made for a great lunch, eaten while sitting on the store's front stoop, and it cost all of 35-cents. Fortunately I was always able to say, "Charge it," because I never had a whole 35-cents at any one time, except at the end of trapping season. My folks ran a regular charge account there.

I still make my subs the exact same way, except, of course, I have to substitute for the great Italian bread that's not available here.

I remember Kessler AFB in the very early 70's. They had a "stacked" sandwich stand by the BX. They only had Ham, beef, or processed turkey. They served it on a french bread or hoagey roll, stacked 3' high w/ lettuce, tom and onion. I would wolf them down so fast i choked... I always had that problem w/good ham. I just never had it since a few school brown bags in grammar school! They also had a roach coach that traveled to the classes guring break. In the last classes we could eat and drink. You walked on the short bus and they had a small self serve with hoageys, reg sandwiches and fountain pop.

My Hero is in Northridge, CA right near Cal State Northridge.

Great rolls, assortment of meats available and instead of topping with lettuce, pickles and such they used a salad of diced tomatoes.

If I remember correctly their whole sandwich was about 15 inches long and I could eat the whole thing.

Any one know if they're still around? I don't get to Northridge much these days of full time work.
