Interesting....I wouldn't be surprised if Asbury Park, being not that far from NYC, might have had rich oyster beds in its waters at one time, too.

I mention New York because I believe there was a recent book based on the oyster beds in New York harbor...NYNM, do you recall the name of the book? I think some local paper published reviews/excerpts from it...anyway, apparently up until the twentieth century New York's waters, in the harbor, and in estuaries of the Hudson River had thriving oyster beds...street carts selling oysters were as common as hot dog stands are now in Manhattan...the oysters were so plentiful that they were dirt cheap, and considered food for the "common man."

Of course, pollution and overconsumption put an end to that bounty...but it looks like there are some attempts to "re-seed" these oyster beds in New York's waters...wonder what will become of this effort.

So, was Asbury Park an oystering spot?

Anything past Sandy Hook is "down the shore" in my book.

Oysters are one of the more universal bi-valves, adapting nicely to a wide range of environments and temps. Of course, the difference in taste and size is commensurate with that. Most of the Eastern Seaboard from NH to FL has them (never seen them in Maine). The Gulf Coast is famous for theirs as well, and I assume there are Pacific varieties.

Don't know about the Carib and South American waters, but I would guess they are there

Im sorry about the knock on Jersey Oysters Im a little spoiled down here where we have the best on the East Coast.

Was Pt. Pleasant once an oystering spot?

I know there were a lot of towns in South Jersey (including the place appropriately called Bivalve, NJ) that were known for oysters many years ago.

Very regional thing "down the shore" this coming Sunday. Any of my stalwart shoreites ever been before--been going on for several years I understand and looks pretty interesting. Any observations pluses or minuses are welcomed.
