The soup of the week would vary, but we knew that when they did Split Pea Soup that we were in for a good week. On Monday it would be relatively thin...good, but almost runny. By Wedensday it had thickened up nicely, and by Friday you could stand a spoon in it !! I loved that soup especially on a frigid winter day. I think I was one of the few who would consumme it on the last day of the week...but it was great!

The Chicken /Beef Veggie soup and even the Clam Chowder was also good, but for some reason never went thru the aging/thickening process like the Split Pea!!

Re:End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (the ancient mariner)

New Zealand----amazing, I had no idea you lads had computers down there. Only kidding Mike it is a pleasure to talk to ya !!

I was there in '45, picked up a ship load of meat for the troops throughout the Pacific. I had screwed up and was confined to the ship and never got to set foot on your lovely country.

Good to find out how important your crock pot is. I have two---a big one and a little one and they are crocking away most days.

The cost of food makes using all the left overs and cheaper foods important and the weekend hot tub soup lasts well into the week.

Sarah says Hi Mike !!!!!

Re:End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (Mike_NZ)

 Yay!,
I'm glad that other folks around the world still use crock-pots.
I've had mine since the 70's and it hasn't missed a beat.
To be honest, myself and my partner could not have survived some of the nasty winters down here in NZ, had it not been for piping hot beef or chicken (with a tonne of veges and a lovely thick sauce/gravy).
The amount of electricity they use is irrelevant, when you see the results.
The best thing you can have after a day out in the cold.
RE: End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (the ancient mariner)

Californy -- it is fun to cook for the family----Sarah is a gem but the others are too.
I make up names for some of the food to make it more interesting --- same
old stuff with a new name --- Rodeo Hot Dogs instead of just Hot Dogs.

I love the crook pot and one day by mistake called it the Hot Tub---Sarah heard it
and never forgot---so now it is offically named that. My mother had a pot of soup on
the back burner of the coal stove all the time, and all the leftovers went into it.
It changed contents every day so it was "Soup d'Jour" ---- I only make my soup on
weekends, but it is the same idea. If you are over this way on the weekend stop in
for a bowl of real authentic Weekend Hot Tub Soup---the only thing I can guarantee
will be in it is water.

RE: End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (californyguy)

wonderful post! what a lucky little girl she is to have such a nuice gramps!

I remem how my grandfather would cook when just the two of us were around-things like sausage and peppers, great big hamburger steaks with hominy....so many good memories& the food was only a small part of it

RE: End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (Greymo)

quote:
Originally posted by the ancient mariner

Gregg--Stalks it is---The Celery Stalks at Midnight---
Will Bradley and orchestra-----1948 or 9 or thereabouts.

War Toad---nephews are not as cute as grand-daughters --- sorry to tell you.
But facts is facts is facts. When my nephew was 5 he came into the kitchen following his nose to find me frying some seasoned up chicken cutlets.

He asked me "what's that?"
I replied "What do you think it is?"
"Dead. But the good smell dead."

There had been a recent unfortunate roadkill incident in which "dead" and "bad smell" had connected the dots. Then he also connected the dots beteween "dead" and meat we eat, yet "not bad smell." There was a very confusing period where he just couldn't sort out how meat was dead, but could smell good and bad.

RE: End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (wheregreggeats.com)

I thought it was stalks of celery.
RE: End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (leethebard)

Looks healthy too!!!

RE: End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (Twinwillow)

Sounds, wonderful!

End o' the week ----Hot Tub Soup (the ancient mariner)

I have a 1st class, cute little grand daughter who calls the Crock Pot, or Slow Cooker----"The Hot Tub"--- I could correct her but it is more fun to go along and now it is part of my vocabulary and may always be.

So when she showed up today and saw the Crock crocking away she asked---What's in the hot tub, Gramps ??

It is "Soup de Jour" Sarah-------soup of the day !!!!!

Actually it is soup of the week's leftovers.

The carcass of a young baked chicken who died that I may live !!!
The broth made from the chicken's wing tips, and heart and neck and other un-mentionables, plus a couple of boullion cubes and a bunch of water.

An Onion, a carrot, a couple of ------ of celery ( forgive me I can not remember what the hell they are called )

And then whatever is left in the refrigerator on Friday the day before we shop again----today it was the end of a head of romaine and the end of a head of cabbage.

Celery Ribs----that's what they are called.

And so my dear Sarah---I will cook up a lot of rice and with the soup de jour and some good French Bread we will have a feast.

Bon Jour mon amie

I am off to the kitchen.
