For a little historical background, I was curious where the "Berger" (AKA Bergers, Berger's) came from. Wiki-excerpt:

The Berger Cookie recipe was brought to America from Germany by George and Henry Berger in 1835. Henry owned a bakery in East Baltimore which was later run by his son Henry. While Henry took over his father's bakery, his two brothers George and Otto opened their own bakeries. Around 1900 Otto died, then George and Henry combined the bakeries to create 'Bergers'.

When I was in Germany, local bakers sold the "American Cookie": it was a "black-and-white" cookie, cousin of Berger's. But maybe they should say it's the "German to American back to German Cookie"

Who cares about what the cookie tastes like?? It's only pupose is to get that great gob of chocolate icing into your mouth & that it does very well!! Berger's are one of the things I miss since I moved South.

I'll agree that the cookie is a little dry, but the frosting is perfectly proportioned.

This is precisely why I love this site and the forums. I've never heard of Berger Cookies, but after seeing that picture of the cookies in the retro box, I set off to Google like a woman possessed. Oh, my. They really do sound wonderful. I adore learning more about local foods that are truly of their place, and have meaning to others.

Saw some "copycat" recipes online, but I'm highly tempted to order the originals through their Web site. All in the interests of research, mind you! If I were to use a "copycat" recipe, I would certainly need to compare it to the original. Correct?

(How's THAT for rationalization?)

I used to go to the place where they made the cookies (in the early 1990's). It was a string of garages in a run down part of town. You had to rap on a metal door with your keys and they would check you out before letting you in. You could get a box of day old cookies or a half of a chocolate cake for $1 I'm still a big fan, even at full price.

I was just kidding.

My call for your banning was actually based less on your erroneous opinion that Berger cookies could EVER have "too much frosting" and more for your inaccurate statement that said cookies are only worthy one of your daughter's severed fingers.

These are clearly two-digit worthy cookies, my to-be-banned-friend.

They are a cookie that you either love or you hate. I dislike them. I think they are too dry and have way too much frosting on them. On the other hand, my daughter in law would cut her finger off for one.

I was in Baltimore a few weekends ago and brought back 3 lbs. of the Berger's cookies. The ladies in the office tore through them in a matter of days, with a little help from me, of course!

I am quite happy to report that the Giant grocery stores in the DC area, at least one of them that is near me, now carry the packages of Berger cookies! I've had ... uh, several packages and they taste very good.
