(seafarer john)

Just a few days ago we had the pleasure of lunch at Ellas in Calabash, NC.

As recommended by several knowledgeable roadfooders, I ordered the platter of fried seafood. The platter consisted of about a dozen small fried shrimp, a small fried filet of flounder, and about a dozen fried oysters. The little shrimp were excellent - lightly battered and needing no sauce at all. The flounder was good with a bit of tartar sauce. The oysters were outstanding with just a squeeze of lemon.

Actually, I prefer my oysters raw with a bit of mignonette sauce, but those fried oysters we had at Ellas taught me how good they can be in the right cook's hands.

I should add here that, as mentioned above by other posters, Wentzell's in Mobile, Al serves oysters right up there with the very best I've ever had - we pigged out on raw oysters there and had a sample from the plates of other roadfooders of fried, Bienville, and Rockefeller and they were all very good accompanied by generous amounts of cold draught beers.

Cheers, John
RE: Fried oysters.
