UPDATE : The New York Diner is no more !!! It made it thru last winter (somehow!), but did NOT make it thru THIS one ! Just drove by there today, March 17th, 2010, 6:30 pm

It is NOW a PING PING Chinese Restaurant...
As you can see from the pic, there is already more activity outside the place, than I've ever seen at that dismal New York Diner

I would've made a bet with someone that the DELI was'nt going to be in business much longer! Justice was served!

Ellen- I was really lucky to have been so close to the beach but it took moving to PA for me to truly appreciate how lucky I really was. Now I only get down to South Jersey a few times a year and miss being able to get home from work and walking down to the beach to swim for an hour.

And your comments about AC are spot on. My grandfather used to own a pool hall and my grandmother would serve Italian dishes out of the small kitchen. Then once the casino's moved in all of those special little establishments sort of withered away. Oh well at least there is still Angelos!

I agree! What was that all about?? The previous post was all of one month old. Any additional comments even if they are like three years old are always welcome. AGREED! Welcome , Capt. Murdock..
I'm sure Margate and Northfield were great places to grow up..
with the beach right there, etc..
Plus, AC had so many more good "mom and pop" restaurants "BC" (before casinos) ....

I grew up in north Jersey, and you were lucky to have the beach right there! We had to drive an hour to get to the closest beach, Sandy Hook
I still love making pit stops at places like Seaside Heights, etc..

glad you found my trip report, and glad I could bring back some memories for you.
It's neat to have someone retrieve my report from the archives...
as it often takes 2 or 3 hours to do these reports, and the replies usually die off in a few days.....(it's a neat "rush" when I first get my replies, though!)

I grew up in Margate and Northfield and have great memories of my Mom bringing home some delicious sides from the Tilton Market. I even remember the smaller store that was there before they remodeled. They are a great family who really care about their products.

Thanks again! Those pictures made me feel like I was home again.

Hey, it is hard to get good sandwiches in CA.

I talked to my mom, and LOL, where was she ? Thanksgiving. AC! That old "Met's girl was going strong, even at 90 yrs. !

The Beachball's is now "Breadsticks Cafe"..
I used to occasionally eat at the very first incarnation, which was called the Celebrity Deli, in Resorts Casino's early years..
Resorts opened in 1978, the first A.C. Casino, for those that did'nt know.

I agree about those A.C. buffets! Most of the time, they leave a lot to be desired! Harrahs is about the best one now, IMO, although I still don't find their prime rib "SUCCULENT", just decent..
(same as how I feel about the prime rib on the Borgata buffet; many people like the Borgata buffet the best, though)

The Tropicana and the Hilton buffets look like cafeteria food to me..
(however, the stuff I saw at Piccadilly Cafeteria in Daytona Beach puts those buffets to shame..)

We always enjoyed Beachball's at Resorts; they would put out the pickle tray, with half sours, sours, pickled green tomatoes, etc. I'm sure it was a slicer joint, but we liked it, especially compared to the horrible buffets.

God, I miss South Jersey! And I miss shopping at Tilton Market...used to go there all the time when I lived in Smithville. Those beach pics gave me pangs. Although I won't be living in Jersey, in a few short days, I will be moving to Easton, and will be much closer to the beach than I am now. And I am excited about that!

There IS a Patsy's, and there WAS a Stage, as it went under a few months or so back.
The guy who was leasing the restaurant space, Greg, is now running this new NY Diner Deli...

Yes, uninteresting/ UNINSPIRING food...

But so I won't get sued, I will say I LOVED the turkey!

Great assortment of side dishes and HOMEMADE TURKEY GRAVY !

Since I was off all day yesterday, Monday, I had plenty of time to oogle over their other side dishes, as well.
Bought some killer BREAD STUFFING (sans sausage!)

Look at all those MARSHMALLOWS on the sweet potato casserole

Now THIS is what I'm talking about ! Best store made gravy I've ever had! I used it to SUPPLEMENT that leftover turkey from the A.C. deli!

Their deli is mostly just Dietz and Watson sliced stuff, with a few hot prepared items. Plus a great selection of A.C. area breads and rolls from various bakeries. I bought an Italian loaf from Colandra's, that was out of this world.

I don't know how they manage to make all that homemade gravy!
I mean, where do they get all the turkeys from?????
They do have a catering menu, so maybe there are lots of cooked turkeys continued being ordered on a regular basis?
(cause the only turkey behind the deli case that I saw was that Dietz and Watson stuff)
Their side dishes are way better than anything I've had in the majors

This place deserves a "shout out" !!!

I'm not gonna go there. I've got the sneaking feeling they won't be around long. And oh, that motel! If I had a nickel for everytime I've passed that motel, I'd never have to work again! The food looks so uninteresting. Now I know why we usually just eat at Tony's Baltimore Grill when we go to A.C.!

I saw that you mentioned Lou's in Ventnor, That was once owned by a very close friend of my brother Fred's, Barry Seidel.

No, that area never got more popular with gamblers; in fact, it's probably even less popular now, if anything..

That is the area where the bodies of 4 prositutes were found (in a swamp behind the motels) a couple of years ago. The killer has never been found , not yet, anyway.

With the exception of a few decent Route 40 motels, like the Hampton Inn and the Red Roof Inn, (which are off to the right, as you come into town), the other places are serious fleabag joints.

There's been some talk in recent years of revamping the area; so far, it's just talk, though...

Never heard of Hi Hat Joe's; sounds intriguing , though!
I do miss the "DIP STIX" that had a few locations on the AC boardwalk. They used Hebrew National hot dogs and specialized in corn dogs! They've been gone since sometime in the 1980's, though..

I never cared for that Baltimore Grill, as their sauce tasted like it was'nt the real thing, to me... but, it's been a bunch of years; perhaps I'll give them a 3rd chance.
My friend Scott loves the place, though...and it's cheap, too.

Regarding LOU'S DELI...when I first moved to the AC area , in 1993, I had a 4th floor walk-up tiny studio apt ($495 a month), right on Nashville Ave in Ventnor; and Lou's was on the corner of Nashville and Ventnor Ave.
I was about only 100 away from LOU'S...I used to do a lot of take out from them. But even so, I was often told that it used to be a lot better in previous years. Yes, that hot roast beef was good.
CIRCA 2008: Not only is Lou's out of business, but the building was torn down; nothing has replaced it yet.

1. Kornblau's Deli for corned beef and pastrami
2. Lou's in Ventnor for open faced hot roast beef with gravy and french fries
3. Hi Hat Joe's on the boardwalk in Chelsea for hot dogs and fruit drinks
4. Baltimore Grill for pizza

A.C really improved the main corrider into town...(at the end of the AC Expressway) Used to be a horrible looking public housing project.
Now it is all landscaped, and there is a huge outdoor outlet mall !!!

Rye bread was "okay"...you're right, it's a regular commercial brand, "Ginsburg's Rye Bread", a VERY local brand, made right here in AC.
In fact, if I so desired, I could eat that rye bread to my hearts content, as they serve it 24 hours a day in our free employee cafeteria in the casino. (along with Ginsburgs bagels)
