I received a dvd in the mail today announcing the bottling of "my" MM Barrel (end of June) and introducing the new 94 proof Makers 46 A single barrel production of pepped-up Makers Mark. Interesting story about the recipe, but you can find it on the Makers website at your leisure.

I may try a bottle of the "46" when I can find it locally.

My son took a bunch of his motorcycle touring group to the Makers Mark Distillery for the tour this weekend. He commented to me that they have a new and very 'classy' tasting room now included in the walk-around tour. I am looking forward to "my" barrel opening in a month or two. We plan to visit to get a bottle that we can claim as coming from "our" barrel.

PS- Janet firmly ruled out my purchase of the whole barrel ($4500), especially since Makers Mark says they have to bottle it prior to sale...In other words, I can't have that 50+ gallon wooden barrel set up in my kitchen with a draft 'Spout' on it to pour from... Damn, I thought that would be the ultimate "man-toy" in my kitchen !!

Well, I guess a bottle will be a good memory of the 9 years we've been waiting. It will join a few other MM commenerative bottles we have on the shelf. MM does several 'special' bottles each year, mainly for the UK and UofL Sports programs and for The Derby and other horse related events in the Bluegrass.

4 Roses runs around $45 a fifth so I'd say it's in the higher end of some of the bourbons. Willett is one that is even better and you'll have to ask for it in the Louisville area Mayor Al. It's not readily available. I had some It's reportedly quite smooth. I had some Michael Collins Single Barrel Irish Whiskey last Saturday and it's a keeper.

FoodBme- I wasn't literate enough at that time to know what was good and what wasn't. I do recall that My Stepfather used J W Dant (the WalMart of Whiskey) for his nightly 'HighBall' unless there was reason for some celebration...then the 4 Roses came out.
We will find some in this area shortly and report back. With MM and Knob Creek already open, and Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve waiting on the shelf, the 4 Roses may have to wait a bit, so any input from members will be welcome.

I remember 4 Roses from the 50's also. I was a teenager then. As I recall, 4 Roses was a low end Bourbon, Kinda like the Old Milwaukee of Bourbons. Was my perception incorrect? Where does it rank in the line of Bourbons as far as quality goes?

My brother is a big bourbon fan. He bought a case of 4 Roses for his son's wedding with instructions for use. No mixing ( only a splash or two of water). I thought it was some pretty smooth bourbon. I think he bought a case form a liquor store in southern Indiana. They placed an order with their distributor.

To bring this back to the topic at hand, Have any of you had a sample (or more) of the newly restored "4 Roses" Bourbon? My StepFather kept a bottle of it around for special events when I was a kid,(1950's) then it seemed to disappear from the market for many years. Recently the distillery has been opened to visitors and we are seeing some marketing activity in conjunction with the Kentucky Bourbon Council's activities. I have yet to purchase any, and wonder if any of you have tried it??

I have fond memories of our cyber-friendship that does indeed extend far back into the Pre-marriage days for me. We go back farther than Roadfood...in fact for those who may remember the AOL that charged by the hour for net-service and the chat-lists that AOL maintained, We used to talk travel and food stuffs on those sites in the early 1990's. It is nice to see you're still around...and still in the new England area, I suppose? We are safely encased here in the Louisville area and while we are indeed slowing down a bit, all is as well as can be expected. Grandkid count has stabilized at 23, but 1st grandkid is approaching marriage-age, so we may have to start a new list for Great-Grandkids soon.

We have not done the MM weekends, either the Bourbon Festival or the Redheads event, as I am not real fond of large crowds and the rough turf of rural fairgrounds. We have done several visits to locations along the Bourbon Heritage Trail and stopped to sample the wares at several fine distilleries along the way.

Yes, yes, yes~~ I realize it has been a while since this thread was up, but that's 'me'~always just a bit behind!

I'm so happy to see you are still carowsin down the Road, Al! How is your health? How many grandbabies have dandled on your knee by now? I'm sure its double digits and then some. Still none for me...not so much as a daughter- or son-in-law!!

I came on here this morning looking for some Retro-Candy information and found what I was looking for~~this site has really grown well!!

For the record, I'm a Connemara 12 year old single malt girl, heavy on the Peat, please. I suppose that's to be expected, as me roots be deep sunk in County Mayo, what with all this red hair and feistyness I don't seem to grow up and out of!. I certainly would not pass up a bit of 'your' barrell of MM!! I 'am' sorry I missed the 'Thoroughbreds and Redheads' weekend...while I am not sure what it is, I'm certain I was there is spirit!!!

My Bourbon Barrel comes due early in the spring of 2009. I haven't decided if I will part with the $4000 it takes to buy the 53 gallon contents of the barrel, or if I will be satisfied with one Special Bottle from "My Barrel" ?

Since this thread popped up again, I can ask...how do you know when your barrel "comes due"?

Just got an email from Maker's Mark regarding their
"Thoroughbreds and Redheads" Weekend. Check your Ambassador paperwork and if your barrel number falls between 480461 and 481000, you'll have a couple of bottles waiting for you! You'll have between April 1 - June 30 to pick them up.

I, too, am a Maker's Mark Ambassador, though I don't drink much whiskey. Someone signed me up a couple of years ago, and I do enjoy getting their (semi-)annual packages in the mail. I gave the wrapping paper and ribbon to a co-worker whose husband will enjoy the packing materials more than I.

I look forward to purchasing a bottle from "my" barrel when the time comes, as well.

I tried MM for the 1st time this week. Bought a 50ml bottle. So I guess when my Woodford runs out I'll buy a bottle of this.

I feel guilty. I just bought a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 last week. I reserve Makers Mark for my Christmas list for those that might want to buy me a bottle. I figure it would not be good form to receive and then pull out my own bottle.

I just signed up to be an Ambassador this weekend and will look to forward to seeing what they have to offer.

Have you considered seeing if a group of Roadfoodies want to go in and split the cost of that barrel? I think you'd be surprised how many would want to help out.

So, for $4000 you could buy the whole 53 gallons, bottled. That's a Hell of a bargain, but I dont think even the whole Glee Club could drink up that much Bourbon in our lifetimes, so what could one d with it? I'm sure you couldn't re-sell it without a license and who has that much storage space...

They will bottle the contents of the barrel at the appointed date, no matter who buys it.

I have the option of
1. Buying one bottle certified to be from 'my' barrel or
2. Buying the total bottled contents of that barrel (roughly 53 gallons) in regular bottles. I don't know if they would be in fifths, liters, quarts, or the 1.75 liter bottles.

There is NO Option that will allow for the continued aging in the barrel. Since they have over a million barrels in the aging process at any given time, it really is not feasible to personally visit your specific barrel during the aging process. You can, however attend the 'uncorking' of the barrel (they will email the date and time to you in advance!) and observe 'your' Bourbon as it is bottled and labeled...then buy one of those bottles.

Al, I don't understand. If you buy the barrel, all you get is an opportunity to buy one or more bottles from it? Just what would you get for your $4000? Can we, as individuals, lawfully own more than a few bottles of whiskey at any one time. And, if one actually owned a barrel kept stored at the maker's place, how could one actually access their treasure?

I hope you are not of Czech Heritage!!! When my Mom passed away 3 years ago, we had several of the Czech side of the family come to the family gathering---more of a reunion than a funeral (Mom's Wishes fulfilled)--- Anyway we have never seen Bourbon and Brandy consumed in such volume as happened that evening, and I have shared space with some real 'volume-drinkers!!' If you have Czech's in the family, I recommend you go for the Barrel for your departure celebration !!

AL, go for the barrel. Hand bottles out as a gift at the Feb. glee club meet.
You will be talked about for years to come.

On the CBS Morning show last week they explained that the used barrels were shipped to Scotland to be used in the making of scotch whixkey.

John, and others, While it is a neat idea, I don't think I want to get involved with the logistics of the bulk purchase. They are going to bottle the contents of that barrel sometime early in the Spring of 2009. According to the notice I received I will have the opportunity to purchase one bottle that is certified to have come from "my" barrel. I don't know how far in advance notice must be given if the person desires to buy the entire contents, I just know that the price was in the $4000 range and it was for contents only.

They do not present the option of keeping the contents in the barrel to continue the aging process. Having tasted some 18 year old Bourbon when we visited the Bourbon Heritage Center at the Heavens Hill Distillery in Bardstown,KY, I can say that there was a noticeable difference between their 7 year old Heaven's Hill Bourbon and the ELIJAH CRAIG they were offering as an example of Mature 18 yr old Bourbon.

Alternatively, could we maybe buy some shares from you and keep it in the barrel for few more years to get some age on it?

Seems to me we'd only need about 20 or 30 people to kick in and we'd all have a stake in a happy furture with some real class bourbon.
