miss harold loved the sturgeon and eggs for breakfat and their brisket is incredible. harold is one nice guy. my mother was in a nursing home and everytime i went to his place he gave me his matzoh ball soup and would not charge me he would say give this to your mother with a hug from me great food great guy

Oh yeah, I knew egg creams were just choc syrup (often it's the Fox's U-Bet brand )
and seltzer. But I just thought there may have been some magic touch you put on it.

We had "Herman", the local bookie in Union, NJ while growing up..
his store was more the size of a kids small bedroom...

but Herman did'nt sell no egg creams! (unfortunately) just old candy

Mr. Paduto used fountain syrup and fountain seltzer. The trick was getting him off the phone as he was a bookie. He sold newspapers,old candy,
and fountain stuff in a store that was no bigger then your living room but it was a front. His son and I were best friends & neighbors in the tenements.

Don’t forget the stick pretzel for dipping, it's really good.

The pickle bar and rye bread make the place, nothing wrong that pastrami either. Another of your great reports Ellen.

BTW, I remember getting chocolate egg creams at Paduto's candy store on Tremont avenue in the late 40's. They came
with a pretzel stick to dip in it. Every now and then I'll make them for my grandkids. Will keep the recipe a secret.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Harold's pastrami sandwich appears again in all it's gourmet glory. Jeez, that's just beautiful. Just beautiful.

I love the ends of the rye bread slathered in butter or I like to fold up pieces of pastrami in them. The Health Salad looks wonderful. Full sour on your plate...You know! The only way to go!

I impulsively did a "pastrami run" yesterday!
I "Mapquested" Harold's; the official stats ARE: It's 97 miles from my A.C. condo. "One hour and 38 minutes" And I was craving some good succulent pastrami!

Hey, I figure it's been awhile since we had a report from Harold's!
6 months ago, and it was mine! 7 months ago and it was Bruce and Sue's. We really run neck-in-neck with these Harold's reports.
I figure theirs must be due out tomorrow!!
(I even looked for them in the restaurant; LOL)

HAROLD'S DELI, EDISON, NJ off exit 127, Garden State Parkway

I got seated (but not by Harold this time) (where was Harold??)
and I rushed up to the famous pickle bar..
The HEALTH SALAD was divine. It tastes like they put oil in it.Juicy!

This is what I call "RYE BREAD MOUNTAIN"

Help yourself; take some extra slices in your "doggy bag".
I know I did. I also enjoyed a few slices with butter right there.
Harold expects it. Then you've got fresh (not soggy) bread for your leftover pastrami.

I've had choc. shakes a lot lately, but it's been ages since I've had a CHOCOLATE EGG CREAM. It was good.

Some of you may be wondering, "What's an egg cream?!?"
Go ahead, ask me!!

Here it comes! My PASTRAMI ! It's the regular sized 13 ounce $15.50

Definitely a nice size; I even had some leftovers for breakfast the next day, today, before work.
And I'm having more pastrami for breakfast tomorrow!
My total bill, about $20.00, for the pastrami and the $2.95 egg cream. I thought that was a great deal, plus I left 5 bucks tip.
Go for the pastrami when in Harold's. Lots of other items are crazy priced, like the "just a scoop" tuna platter. But the pastrami is a real good deal, and is their specialty!!!!

Pastrami was nice and soft; real good flavor, but yet a little blander than I prefer. I still rank CARNEGIE #1 (more garlicky flavor on the crust). IRVING'S #2.
Harold's rye bread is much better than either of those places, however. And it has bragging rights to that wonderful rye bread/pickle bar, which helps make it a great overall experience.

And I could'nt resist buying one of the large cookies by the register. $4.00. I love chocolate chip cookies!

As I left Harold's, I asked the cashier "Hey, where's Harold??
Is he at the other location, the new one?"
She replied "Yeah; he's there about 65% of the time now".
(I guess cause that new East Brunswick location has been open only 6 months, and needs more of Harold's TLC.)
(whereas, this Edison location has been open for 11 years, as the cashier told me) Looks like Edison can run itself better.
Still, I miss Harold's steady presence at the Edison location.
There was no Harold to greet me and seat me at the podium this time!

Pulling away from Harold's, I took this "overview" shot..

After Harold's, I made 2 more food stops, hungry or NOT!
I checked out "BOBBY'S BURGER PALACE" (as in Bobby Flay's) outside of the Monmouth Mall, Eatontown, NJ. (report coming!)

Then I checked out JR's, for yet another burger, in West Long Branch.
Charbroiled burger, this time. Enjoyed the flavor much more.

Then a pit stop to see my sis and her family, by Freehold.
Usually I stay a night or 2, but this time just for a few hours.
Worked off some of that MEAT by playing some ping pong matches with my nephew. We both can play a mean game of ping pong!
