Echo that!! Cognac has produced the worst hangover I ever had, bar none!!! I really can't tell the difference between good or bad Champagne as I drink it so rarely. I think that the last time I had a glass or two was when my daughter was born 14 months ago. I only had one glass and it was ok. Moet & Chandon I think it was.

One that gave me a headache is Bosca Verdi. I used to like their Bosca Spumante. They didn't use grapes from Asti, so they just called it Spumante. Then one day in a NJ liquor store, I found something called Bosca Verdi. To make a long story short, it is beer. Another one of those malt beverage concoctions with fruit flavors.

That's why I always referred to it as "champagne" in my post, but I'll betcha there would have been enough headaches to go around even if we were drinking Dom. pb

Not to come off sounding like a total snot...you are all referring to sparkling wine, not Champagne. Champagne can only come from the DOC region of Champagne, France.

With all the debate on this site about regional differences and preferences in hot dogs, barbecue and the like I think I may have a valid point.

In Southeast Asia in 1967-1968, our AF ration cards allotted 6 bottles of wine per month. Unused by many GI's. Everyone in our hut (15 guys) agreed to buy their wine rats in "champagne" for October, November, and December. Mostly Andre, I think, but since it was all $1 a bottle, we bought whatever was available. We stored them everywhere and, come the 12 days of Christmas, we commenced drinking. There was much disagreement over when these 12 days began, but I believe I had some level of "champagne" hangover from around the 12th of December right into New Year's Day. I know we went through well over 200 bottles and a few guys didn't drink (honest!). Toted around like a can of beer, we enjoyed a bottle each many nights at the outdoor movie shown on the corrugated steel wall of a storage building. The garbage cans were placed right along the wall below the "screen" and had always been the target of long set-shots with beer cans......well, the lifers sure got tired of our "champagne" set-shots which made for a lot more excitement bouncing off the backboard/screen. But.....I digress. That stuff was the worst "champagne" I ever had. pb

Oh, now, Cold Duck is a Thanksgiving staple in my house! We once ordered a case from the local market and what a Thnksgiving it was! The dog loved chasing the corks (now they have a screw top! Sacrilige!!)

Generally speaking I'm not fond of champagne; cheap, moderate, expensive, I don't care for it.
Cold duck, now that brings back memories of long gone days. But do any of you remember an even more repulsive brew called "Malt Duck"? For some now unremembered reason, a softball team I played on for many years used to drink bottles of this awful stuff at their weekly parties. I believe it was a malt beverage (similar to Colt 45) but flavored to taste like cold duck. Ick!

My wife's grandfather gave us a bottle of it once for our anniversary. Oh. My. God. A touch of old rubber tires in the bouquet, with a memory of paint thinner in the aftertaste.

First one I thought of was also Cold Duck! From the wiki,

"The wine was invented by Harold Borgman, the owner of Pontchartrain Wine Cellars in Detroit, in 1937. The recipe was based on a traditional German custom of mixing all the dregs of unfinished wine bottles with champagne. The wine he produced was given the name Kaltes Ende ("cold end" in German), until it was humorously altered to the similar sounding term Kalte Ente meaning "cold duck"."

Sounds about right.

Heh. My Mom is a very very rare drinker. Like maybe once every year or so. But when she does, it's Cold Duck. It think it was her thing in the 50's and 60's as a young woman, so it takes her back.
