I thought it either meant WWII or No Particular Blackout (just that it is all very dark.....)

Re:New York City Blackout Cake (CCinNJ)

I decide to do a little more research on the Blackout Cake, after this thread. I love all things NYC food related! Sadly, the original Blackout Cake is no longer with us. I learned a few things! Well, I learned that not all information on blogs, is correct! I pretty much knew it going in, but I wish to share my findings!

http://zquilts.blogspot.com/search/label/cake%20recipe

First, the Blackout Cake came way before the INFAMOUS Blackout of '72. Well, it was the Blackout of '77! I DO remember it, as an 8 year old (scared to pieces, about the Son of Sam). It was in July not August, as well! Ebinger's filed for bankrupcy, in August of '72!

I also found just how expensive NYC Blackout Cake is, from a mail order source in New Orleans...

http://www.gambinos.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=41

WOW!

In my next life I would have become a blogger! However, if BC's are going for $75 shipped...I will be off baking my little heart out! If the lights go out not to worry! It is just the BLACKOUT OF 2004!!!

Re:New York City Blackout Cake (claracamille)

Cook's Country Magazine has a PBS cooking show. The show is on Saturday afternoons in Indy.

Just last week one of the recipes on the show was for a chocolate blackout cake. I am making one for this saturday- Valentine's Day & my son's 31st birthday.
Re:New York City Blackout Cake (NYNM)

I recall that Ebinger's used to make a great one!
I also recall a similar one from Ebinger's with chocolate and crunchies on the side and white frosting in a large circle on top. It was a few years ago. Maybe time for another! One of my favorite cookbooks!! Money well spent, as I am still reading it, and using it, 17 years later. I remember making the Carrot Top Carrot Cake (delicious) when my youngest son was a toddler. He is 18, now! Time flies when you are having fun!!
Re:New York City Blackout Cake (RubyRose)

Molly O'Neill's "New York Cookbook" has a few pages totally devoted to Ebinger's Blackout Cake, including a copycat recipe. I have never made it but yours sure looks good, fabulousoyster.

Re:New York City Blackout Cake (Twinwillow)

Growing up in NYC, I'm old enough to remember Ebinger's and their fabulous "Blackout" layer cake. If invited to someone's house for dinner, An Ebingers cake was the house gift of choice. And, a "Blackout" was the cake of choice.
Thems was the days.
Re:New York City Blackout Cake (cavandre)

fabulousoyster

Cavandre, that was Zaros Bakery, not Zabars.
Zabars is on Broadway and 80th. Been around since 1930's.

Yep, you're right...hate how the years play tricks on your memory! I used to grab something in there before hopping on a Metro North train. Making the selection was always difficult, as almost everything they make was very good. Whatever I got, it made the commute a lot more enjoyable. I'd give anything to have a place like this down here in FL.
New York City Blackout Cake (fabulousoyster)

I picked it up at Zabar's in Manhattan yesterday, its a wonderful cake, not heavy at all, soft, smooth, delightful devils food cake and dark chocolate pudding layers, covered in crumbs of devils food cake. Made famous by a bakery in Brooklyn called Ebingers, now gone, back in the 50's when a New York City Blackout was just that...a black out, no electricity, usually during the worst of times, the summer months....
