No two Chicagoans ever agree. The sandwich is a system, which includes the beef, the spicing(gravy), the peppers, the giardiniera, and the bread. I've always been a fan of Johnnie's on North Avenue. Not being a giardiniera fan, Johnnie's sweet peppers make my tail wag at high rates of speed. Give me a combo with sweet peppers, soaked, any time. And, don't forget the Italian ice!

CSD
Re:Mr. Beef rumor (danimal15)

From reading the article, I don't think we have to worry about Mr. Beef closing. Sounds like the bank is going to give them a chance to get up to speed on paying back. But I agree - you hate to see small businesses go under. Especially one with so much history.

I've had a lot of beef sandwiches around Chicago (though I've never visited Al's on Taylor), so I think I have an informed opinion on the subject. Mr. Beef remains my favorite after all these years (about 25) that I've been eating Chicago Italian beef sandwiches.

Re:Mr. Beef rumor (jeepguy)

 I also think Johnnie's is a little over-rated.

Re:Mr. Beef rumor (carolina bob)

Buddy, I'm afraid I can't agree with you about Johnnie's. It was a better-than-average beef sandwich, but I didn't care for their giardiniera; it appeared to be one of those mediocre store-bought brands. Mr. Beef makes their own giardiniera and it's my favorite.
Re:Mr. Beef rumor (BuddyRoadhouse)

nocarolina, although I'm not a big fan of Mr. Beef, I never like to see any small business go under, especially one with as much history as Mr. Beef.

On the other hand if you're concerned about losing a great resource for Italian beef sandwiches, stop in at Johnnie's up on North Avenue in Elmwood Park. They've got what I consider to be the ultimate Chicago style Italian beef. In addition to their sandwiches, they make their own Italian lemonade ice which beats out just about anyone else in town.

Buddy

Johnnie's Beef
 7500 W North Ave
(between 75th Ave & Jackson Ave)
Elmwood Park, IL 60707
 (708) 452-6000
Re:Mr. Beef rumor (carolina bob)

Oh no no NO! Not Mr. Beef!!! I can't deal with this. If Mr. Beef closes, I'm going to go down in the State St. subway and throw myself onto the third rail ( just kidding - I'm too young to go! ) Seriously, I sure hope that this gets worked out okay; Mr. Beef has THE best italian beef sandwich there is, and we sure can't afford to lose it. Keep your fingers crossed, roadfooders.
Re:Mr. Beef rumor (danimal15)

 Not just a rumor.
