My Mom has both Osteo & Rheumatoid arthritis. She was in pain and she is not one to be idle...so it was pain for all of us as well. After a hip replacement along with two knee replacements and a metal rod in her shoulder she quickly tore up the handicap placard ( hey...no more free parking ) and is at swim class dance class exercise class and any other class that will have her! It is a new lease on life for her and she has not looked back.

The recovery went extremely well - there was no physical therapy - the surgeon just gave us a list of things to do and not do and said that we'd know what the limitations were and to get on with it. After two weeks our lives were back to normal.

We have a close friend that had the same surgery done in July- same hospital, surgeon and right hip, but he hasn't recovered as well - I might also add that a hip replacement sort of works on you r mind a bit - it's technically an artificial limb but it's inside your body and takes some getting used to -

I guess I will report a one and one quality of life report....
My Mom had a hip replacement done at age 88. She had always been very active and exercised regularly up to and after the surgery. She was very mobile almost immediately after a short rehab period. She had no pain and seemed to get around better than before the new hip was installed. Hers was a very successful operation.
On the other hand, I have a cousin, my age (mid-sixties) who had a hip replacement done 12 years ago. It has had to be replaced twice since and her ability to get around is severely limited. She was a serious Vollyball player all her life and since the first surgery that has not been possible. She is a very unhappy person as a result of this surgery.

I sincerely wish the best to you in your recovery and in dealing with the results of the operation. May you experience the full recovery my Mom enjoyed !

The spouse is recovering from a total hip replacement last Monday - we did a lot of research on it and pretty much knew what to expect, but I suppose everyone's experience with it is different -

anyone have any imput to share??

Hey Original ---just stumbled in here after seeing you Popeye's post----had total right hip done about 8 years ago and it went fantastically well. I note surgery was in March-----how has recovery gone? Had extensive PT which set course for great recovery---hope all is well------just make sure you have Surgical ID card if spouse is flying------------as hip will set off alarm every time----!!!!!!!!! Had mine done in Northern New Jersey----if you want more info send a private e-mail and I will be glad to reply.

mbrookes - no, the surgery was done in Little Rock -

as for the Press Register - I suppose they're struggling like most small town newspapers, but, like you and I, we still depend on it for the local news of the community.

iqdiva, you sure are right about life being different. Nowadays, standing up or sitting down is a slow, painful process. Getting in or out of bed is even worse, and getting in and out of the car is a load of laffs. At least I'm not on that walker or using a cane anymore.

baileysoriginal, did she have the surgery locally? If so, I probably know some of the medical people involved.

Even though I've been gone for over 20 years, I'm still interested in all things Coahoma County. I even still take the C'dale Press Register! And what's with that? They seem to be on a slippery slope down.

Oh Nocarolina ... Life is very different after hip injury ! I lost so much motility and my balance hasn't ever been the same since I broke my hip ... And , I have rheumatoid arthritis associated with my connective tissue disease that has really affected my hip at the site of the break . But , as you said , it is surely a great blessing to be able to walk ... There are so many folks who can't ...

I sure can sympathize, iqdiva. Last winter, I too broke my right hip ( in three places! ) and my recovery process was quite similar to yours. Unfortunately, the hip didn't heal quite right, and now I'm stuck with a very noticable limp for the rest of my days. Oh well, sure beats not walking at all....

I have severe osteoporosis & in 2001 when I was 47 , I broke my right hip ... I took several months to heal & I had in-home physical therapy with my therapist Charlie 4 days a week ...

had hip surg in 2000 . it took me about a full year to really fully recover.i felt good after a month but with all the muscles and nerves cut.i cant stress make sure they do the exercises during rehab.i had to learn how to walk straight in rehab cause i threw everything off when i was needing the hip.good luck and do the exercises.

Thank you, Mr. Fieldthistle, and everyone - we've been married 24 years and this is our first encounter with any kind of surgery for either of us. I'm trying to be a good caregiver.

and it took him a while to recover.
He lived alone and had no one to help.
You will be very important in your spouse's life

My 80 year old neighbor had both done and was back walking un aided in less than 3 weeks. Don't push it but best wishes for a speedy recovery!

This was a mininally evasive surgery - only a 3 inch incision, only 2 days in the hospital and so far a good recovery. All fingers are crossed that it keeps on going well.

Have a friend who hurt his hip as a young man and dealt with pain and problems moving for years because he was afraid of hip replacement. At 40 he moved like an 80 year old. Finally did it a while ago and regrets every day he waited as he is now pain free and more mobile than he has been in 20 years. Hope the healing is fast and uneventful.

My husband had hip surgery years ago and was soon hiking 10 miles along the beach every day. It was great that he had it done as soon as he did as it enabled him to enjoy his hiking again for a few more years.

I had one replaced three years ago,I went in the Hospital on Friday and got out on Sunday,I went back to work on Monday and it was all good for three months till I fell and broke my leg.Now I can't stand more than four hours or so on my feet and can't do a lot of things I used to.If I had to do it over again I would have waited a few more years .Theres a lot they don't tell you about hip surgery.

I'm afraid I can't really help either, but I hope (s)he recovers quickly and is on his (her) feet again soon. I understand the recovery time is a lot less than it used to be and the materials used are nothing compared to the older days -- even 20 years ago.
