I flipped through this book at my local bookstore, being the fan of road eats that I am. It looked like a very useful guide to regional yumminess all over our great nation. However, as a native Southerner, I noticed two GLARING omissions in the southern food section.

1. No entry for gumbo? Are you kidding? This is one of the most uniquely American foods around, certainly one of the most iconic southern foods, and there's no entry for it? Worse, the authors list a restaurant under another heading, The Original Oyster House in Mobile, AL, without mentioning that it is famous for its excellent gumbo. And let's not even mention that they list so many delicacies in and around New Orleans, and gumbo is not on the list. To their credit, they included boiled peanuts - a staple almost unheard of outside the south - but no gumbo, which is known nationwide?

2. Okay, so the authors were savvy enough to include Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa, AL, as one of their go-to places for ribs, as it should be. And yet, under meat-and-three, they neglect the greatest southern cooking joint in the former Confederacy, which is only right across the river from Dreamland: the City Cafe of Northport, AL. Maybe it wasn't mentioned because it's technically a meat and four, including sweet tea and bread, for just over five bucks. This place has been feeding Grandma-quality home cooking to starving college students, cops, firemen, and 'hongry' people from all walks of life for nearly forty years. As someone who has his comfort food bona-fides courtesy of family reunions, Christmases at Granny's, and pale imitations of "the Cafe" from all over the south, believe me: The City Cafe serves the best country cooking you will ever eat outside of Granny's house.

Overall, the book looked excellent, and I praise the authors for the things they did include. But come on, guys, you were right there for these two! Just include them in the next printing, and all will be forgiven.

Thanks for the headsup. I got mine from Amazon this week and have already been pawing through it, as has my wife who is not usually into roadfood or foodie stuff (though she enjoys the fruits of my endeavors in that department ;) )

I just got my own copy and, setting aside my beloved Kindle, have begun reading it a page at the time, savoring each comment, recipe, and picture. If you don't have your own copy, go get one now! It's addictive, keeping me up way past any sane bedtime. I have to ration my time just to keep from staying up all night!

Just got my copy today and it looks great. If you read the acknowledgments, you'll see a few names that should be familiar to all roadfooders. But... where's Snappy Lunch and its acclaimed pork chop sandwich? I'm really surprised. How did it get omitted?

I picked my copy up yesterday...I skimmed through it quickly and I'm glad to see there are some restaurants I've visited (and mentioned) in the past that are listed in the book but have never been reviewed either on the forum or in any of the books..

I too would be interested in checking out the polish boy- but it almost sounds very similar to the Primanti's Kolbassi sandwich except its served with bbq sauce.

Picked up a copy of the new book while I was in DC over the weekend. Of course the first thing I did was see how all of my favorites compared to the Sterns. Oddly, many of my own choices finished second, like Poochies for Chicago dogs, Robert's Grill for onion burgers and Rancho de Chimayo for sopaipillas. But Hocutt's not the best hushpuppies? Them is fightin' words!

All the color photos look great and there are lots of local specialties I have never heard of before. I can't wait to go to Cleveland to try a Polish Boy. The book gets two big !

My daughter and son-in-law were here this past weekend and spent a lot of time looking at the book. My son-in law, who does not believe in buying books, is now going to buy one.

We had fun recalling the year that 10 members of our family drove to Santee, SC for a long weekend and went to 3 barbeque places; two of them being listed in a ROADFOOD book.

We had a wonderful time and great food and even now, people cannot believe that some of the family drove 800 miles for this gathering.

My copy arrived on Saturday (I had pre-ordered from Amazon).

It's paperback, so very portable. It is great fun, and has many color illustrations (photos). The food pictures don't always "translate" well, but the exterior photos of neon signs and such are great.

In addition to all the material about food -- which is mostly divided up regionally, although there are some sections on "Best in America" of various dishes like pizza and pancakes that span the country (as well as a couple of places in Alberta, Canada), the Sterns also include a few commentaries on interesting things to see or do along the way.

However -- I found an error in one of those listings. In their discussion of Our Lady of Guadelupe (I think I spelled that right, but I'm traveling at the moment, and don't have dictionary handy), they include a painting that purports to be of the Virgin, but in fact, it is a painting of "The Little Flower," St. Therese of Liseux. (I'm not Catholic, by the way.)

I received my copy of "100 Things To Eat Before It's Too Late". It looks terrific and I cannot wait to start reading it. For those of you who love illustrations, this book is full of them.

It also gives interesting information about iinteresting places to shop, and there are even recipes. Every roadfooder is going to want this book for their glove compartment, Happy reading to all!
