It is equal or better than Daddy Jack's. If you want a roadfood experience give the Friendly Tavern in downtown Zionsville a visit. That's where I went over Christmas.

Friendly Tavern Hoosier Classic Tenderloin

Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (HDtravlr1)

Davydd- Daddy Jack's was great! I may have missed it.

I never got around to it. It was a great 6 week, 7,500 mile trip that covered at least 12 national parks and monuments and every state in the west. I got preoccupied with other matters.
Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (trzhotel)

DavyDD, did you do a trip report here for your fall 2009 trip to Nevada and other place? Muldoon's for instance is an Irish Pub though too a bit too cute. It is located further up Meridian Street in old Carmel. BTW, the drive up and down Meridian Street is a nostalgia treat of Indianapolis in its heyday of old mansions.

Bourbon Street Distillery at 501 Indiana Ave. downtown has character although the tenderloin I had there was a bit greasy for my taste. It just could have been the fryer cook that day.

http://web.mac.com/davydd...ndianapolis%2C_IN.html

If you want the Mecca experience of Indy, The Flag Room at Brickyard Crossing on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway grounds would be a good choice. Their consistency is lacking. I had average there and I also had the biggest tenderloin I ever had in Indiana there.

Another little bit of Indianapolis history would be Plump's Last Shot in the Broad Ripple neighborhood. It is a restaurant in a converted house. Excellent tenderloin and interesting neighborhood. Probably a better place in warm weather so you can sit outside on the patio with the dog lovers. Dogs are welcome there on the patio and it is a literal zoo.

My tenderloin photos of Plump's Last Shot and Daddy Jacks have been used by newspapers around the country. They evidently were deemed photogenic and representative of a good tenderloin. Their tastes backed them up.
Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (HDtravlr1)

Daddy Jack's it is! There are many good ones. However, do NOT go to the Mug 'n Bun in Speedway at least for a tenderloin. It is a good drive-in experience but their tenderloin is nothing but a fritter and not representative at all of what a good tenderloin is.

The Grindstone Charley's I go to is the one on Crawfordsville Rd. in Speedway. I'm there every Friday evening before the Indianapolis 500.
Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (deeoh01)

Since I consider myself to be an expert on Indy tenderloins (lol) I'd recommend either Daddy Jack's (north side) or Muldoon's (Carmel). But if you can specify which part of town you'll be in I can tell you the best in that area.

Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (HDtravlr1)

David just found this trip report that I missed when you posted it. I can only work in one BPT on this trip to Indy.
Which place would you suggest?
It appears maybe the one named after you at Grindstone Charley's?
Is that the location Crawfordsville Rd?

Thanks
Johnny

Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (ennajean)

David as usual you make the most interesting roadtrip reports of anyone I know.
Just want to add to your report that Nicks Kitchen has the BEST pecan waffles, next time go for breakfast and give them a try.
Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (Davydd)

Nancy, If grilled I would think it shouldn't be breaded. The Suzie-Q in Mason City, IA, Mr. Dave's and Daddy Jack's all had grilled without any breading or marinade. They were all very tender. Suzie-Q and Mr. Dave's grilled on the smooth top. The Daddy Jack's appeared grilled on a flame grill.
Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (Nancypalooza)

What a lovely trip! And it must be awfully neat seeing your name on that menu at Grindstone Charley's. It is a little strange that they grill the tenderloin with the breading on it--but is it good like that?

Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (Sundancer7)

Davydd

Sundancer7

I believe your method of travel is very good. Not too big and it gives you freedom. I agree that it is not a inexpensive way to see the country but it offers you lotsa options.

In some respects it is a very inexpensive way to travel. Granted buying a camper van can be a considerable investment but many of my fellow compatriots have gotten into the game buying used inexpensive camper vans costing no more than an average car. Our average cost for accommodations per night is less than $20 and we prefer state parks with electrical hookups and bath facilities. Many don't mind free stays overnight in Walmart parking lots since camper vans are fully self-contained. Travel cost for us over 6,000 miles, 28 days, average $2.10 per gallon diesel and 23 MPG average equates to less than $20 per day. We may average a restaurant meal about once every other day of the inexpensive roadfood variety of less than $40 so figure a budget of another $20 per day. We could lower that somewhat if my hobby was not pursuing roadfood and BPTs. So our cost on the road is only about $60 per day and I suspect some of that money would have been spent if we stayed home. I estimate I would probably burn half that money at home so I look at our trips costing about $30 per day premium over normal living at home.

Very good answer and I appreciate your rationale. I had never thought about it that way. Your upfront cost on the van had to be significant.

6000 miles is a TRIP! I am sure that it was full of adventure. I very muched liked the perch in Port Clinton which I enjoyed last year. Your note of that made me recall the fine perch that I had. Michael Hoffman turned me on to some very good perch places in Port Clinton. A very interesting area.

Paul E. I have a long list of pork tenderloins I desire to try but can only endure so many with my wife shaking her head in the back ground and wondering about her impending widowhood if I kept up my tenderloin gluttony unchecked by her common sense.
Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (Greymo)

Great report and nice pictures.....................I cannot believe that you did not stop in Baltimore area for a crabcake!

Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (rumaki)

Davydd: As your fellow Hoosier-transplant in the greater Twin Cities, I congratulate you on another excellent trip report. Of course, I would have gone to Hollyhock Hill in Indianapolis, but other than that . . .

Yet another link for us -- I lived in Old Town Alexandria for 18 years, on Franklin Street, just up Washington Street from Southside 815.

Rumaki
Re:RV Rallies, Reunions,Tenderloins, Perch and the Indy 500 (Davydd)

Ann, The Indy Cars are on to Milwaukee this weekend.
