Hey Susan.....I have to go out of town this week for work, and I will be getting back kinda late on Friday. I sure hate to miss Huntsville, but could I come to only the Wintzell's part?

Sorry about not getting togehter with all at the Blue Plate. I had a small family emergency (nothing bad) and just couldn't make it.

I agree that Blue Plate is so, so. There are so much better places to eat here. I wished you could have gone up the road a bit while you were on Governor's Drive and had a burger from Big Spring Diner. They have the old fashioned "greasy" burgers that they are famous for. They are about the size of a Krystal and they serve them with mustard and onions. They also have great chili dogs too. A true road food experience. They have only one table and about 9 stools at a counter. But you see all of Huntsville there. The person in front of you may be dressed to the "T" or just have on t-shirts and jeans. I crave a Big Spring burgers very often and just have to go and have my fix.

Glad to hear that you ate at Ole Heidleburg. It is one of my fav. restaurants in Huntsville and has been open for years. I remember going when I was a teenager (many many moons ago) and it is still as good as ever.

Their veal schnitizel is the one that I order and they have great pan-fried potatoes. I love the red cabbage slaw too. Aren't the desserts yummy looking?

What did you thing of Dreamland? I have only been there a couple of times as I am not really that crazy about it. It is less than a mile from my house too.

Hope you all enjoyed Huntsvile and hope to meet again sometime.

Susan and I missed you Ms. Sassie (we keep saying what is her name?). What is it? Dreamland was good in a different than Memphis style. My daughter had the pork plate and there was more bark than meat and she wasn't crazy about it. We had the ribs. Both of us wiped the sauce off, but the hickory smoked meat was very good. Sides were average except the Mac and Cheese was excellent. J. had peach cobbler for dessert, it was canned peaches floating in canned peach sauce. Nothing for crust. But, hot, with ice cream...tough to complain.

Just in from Wintzell's - it was a 200 mile round trip for me to go there. Tiny but delicious oysters. Yet no Roadfooders in sight! No Roadfood group reservations at 6:30pm as planned. No people carrying Roadfood books. No folks with pictures of food on their tee shirts. Nothing. Ate some oysters while watching the sun set over the lake, then drove back. I'm so disappointed. Maybe we should ALL exchange phone numbers next time.

I am so sorry. I had no idea you were planning on going. I thought I did a roll call about a week ago.

Sorry, but I take exception to this comment. I "bothered" to get in touch with Susan when I responded affirmatively to the Meet/Greet invitation and agreed to come to Wintzell's on Saturday night at 6:30pm. Yes, I checked the thread on Saturday morning for any news or changes. There were none. Then I did errands and spent time with my elderly Mom, and then drove 100 miles to the site of the event. I did not know I needed to come back home and check the site again just to make sure that an event (which had been planned for almost two months) was going to actually take place! The organizer has responsibility for the event that he or she organizes. Even a phone call to the location, asking the restaurant to alert those who showed up and were searching in vain for the Roadfood group, would have been appreciated. As I stated in an earlier post, perhaps the organizer should have asked for everyone's cell numbers in case of a last minute emergency. That surely would have saved me a lot of time, mileage, gas money, and disappointment.

I'm sorry Mr. Will _ Work _ 4 _ BBQ , I didn't mean to say anything that would insult anyone . I had just taken exception to Curbside Grill's post and I knew how very concerned Miss Susan was because she didn't know how to get in touch with the rest of the group . Again , I'm sorry WW4BBQ . Sorry to read of your missing out on whatever was to transpire in the meeting this weekend. At least you didn't have to starve!! I do recommend the exchanging of Cell numbers so that last minute plan changes can be shared. Having participated in a number of these meetings over the years I have found that the majority are filled with fun-folks who share a common interest in the local foods and get along very well. We hope you will try again when the group plans another get-together (perhaps this winter).

Although you are entitled to your own opinion , Curbside Grill you could not be more mistaken . Roadfooders are a most honorable group of fine folks who would never deliberately slight , insult or hurt anyone . Miss Susan had an impossible situation because she didn't have some of the Roadfooders phone numbers and no one with the exception of myself and my husband Paul bothered to get in touch with her or her husband Louis .She tried her best to alert those who had said that they would like to go to Wintzell's in Guntersville by posting on the Huntsville Trip thread . Paul & I had a fabulous time at the Blue Plate with Susan , Louis and their beautiful daughter Jocelyn as well as Miss Ashley & her beautiful children ! Miss Susan was so sweet ... She bought me lunch for my birthday present ! Paul & I can't wait to see everyone again !

I relayed your message to PP at 11:19 EDT. He acknowledged it and said he was going for Oysters at Wintzell's anyway !! Have a good lunch.

A 3 PM added note from PP said that the Wintzell's is a beautiful location with nice folks treating him right...but the Oysters were "PinPoint Tiny". The Server said that's how they come in July !! WE'LL CHECK IT OUT IN THE COOLER MONTHS AS HE CLAIMS THIS PLACE WILL BE A GOOD STOP WHEN THE OYSTERS GET BIGGER!

Day One - on the way to Huntsville we stopped at Tuscumbia and visited the Helen Keller birthplace

Then off to Huntsville. Dinner at Dreamland. Which just happened to be across the street from our hotel.

Jocelyn thought the sauce was pretty tasty.

Day 2 tomorrow with Roadfood friends at the Blue Plate.

July 25th - We met IQDIVA and her great husband Paul for lunch.  We had hoped that Sassie Grits might meet us.
We talked and talked.  Louis and Paul have a similar love for music and the drums, soon chairs were swapped so the
girls and boys could talk together.

We have friends from Memphis who recently moved to Muscle Shoals and Ashlee drove over as well. IQDIVA and Ashlee are Farmville neighbors I believe

]Just before this lunch meet I realized that Paul and Susan were heading back to Dothan and that Wintzell's was 1 1/2 hours away. I am so sorry PP. Thanks to the Mayor, PP was notified that there was a change in plans. I hear PP went anyway and I am sorry we missed him.

I asked IQDIVA to review this restaurant. We were not as impressed by the meat and threes, but they enjoyed them. I will say J had chocolate pie and it was outstanding.

Then off to

Interesting, but not something I think we would go out of our way to again. I believe the initial concept was a good one, but it is apparent they do buy lots of items as well. We saw too many multiples of things to believe they came from someone's suitcase.

Back in Hunstsville Saturday night we found a German restuarant, Ole Heidleberg. There are no German spots in Memphis and I love schnitzel, any kind. We had a great dinner of wiener schnitzel, potato dumplings red cabbage and a piece of Black Forest for dessert. Not totally original, but well worth the time and money. (Last time we had German food was on on our honeymoon)

Me: So when was the last time you had German food?

Me: Very special weekend? 15 years ago?

Louis: OOOH, Gatlinburg. But I thought we had only been married 13 years.
