Hi,
I'll be joining this tour with several friends--a first-time for all of us. Some of us are coming in late Fri. afternoon and are looking for a dinner recommendation--I've seen reference here to Wiechec's. I also see McPartlan's fish fry reco'd on the site. Just in case some of my group aren't fish-fry-fans....anyone have any other suggestions for something not too ridiculously far from the hotel? And any advice on just how long we should expect to wait for a table at a Friday night fish fry? Thanks & can't wait for the tour!

Mr Chips - are you in Portland, OR as your location notes? If so, I am spending this week in your fair city in a series of meetings prior to the eat-fest in Buffalo, and flying there via ORD on Friday for the festivities, Tim is driving in solo from CT and meeting me there. When are you heading out? My flight is Fri AM.

I'm sure you've all got this trip well orchestrated, but if you end up having a little free time and want to explore some of the area south / west of Buffalo, you owe it to yourselves to motor on down to Ripley and have a slice of homemade pie at Meeder's (19 East Main Street).

I've only been there once (tonight) and now kick myself for not having tried it sooner. It's been in operation since 1960 and really seems to be classic roadfood. We had a burger (me) and a classic BLT (Jill) with homemade macaroni salad and potato salad, respectively. Good, home-cooked food (I saw plenty of plates heaped with home-cooked meat, potatoes of all kinds, and veggies out on the floor.

The sign outside says 'World Famous Pies', which of course I questioned a little since the population of Ripley (village) can't be more than a few hundred people. Well, Jill tried to reserve a piece of cherry pie--too late. So she had strawberry-rhubarb and I tried their custard pie. Can you say real pie? With real pie crusts? OMG, they were fantastic! Maybe the sign is right; maybe they really are world famous pies!

In any event, the hardwoods are already starting to turn color already; seems early this year. The fields are lush and the harvest is a-happening. On a beautiful day like today was, a drive out in grape/wine country (many wineries along the lake) and a stop at Meeder's might be just the ticket!

I just got done confirming all the odds-and-ends for the trip. Let me go on record by saying this will be the best eating tour ever. Seriously, you guys will be talking about this one for a while. That is all I will say until the event unfolds.

Stephen, I just want to let you know that this post nearly killed me! I am SO going to shed a tear that weekend while you are all chowing down! Congrats on the move!

Newbie here...been lurking the site, but not the forums...
a visit to the Dinosaur is worth the trip alone....
I hope they include chicken wings..I sometimes get them for a meal when I go

How much food do you get at each location...

Well you guys are gonna have to behave yourselfs on this trip. I'm coming along and will be bringing my Ban book along for the ride

Seriously I'm along for the fun. Right now the plan is that PP will be along too. Although her health makes that subject to change. As of right now I plan on driving up Friday morning. We should have about a 6 hour drive. We'll drive home Sunday night.

This will be my first official RF tour. Although we have done a couple mini-meets in the past. I've also met up with some board members on my trips to Memphis and back.

I hope we can put together an unofficial meet for Friday night. A fish fry sounds great.

I live in Toronto, about a 90-minutes drive down to Buffalo; hubby and I go there frequently. With regards to visiting a candy store etc, I just wanted to make a comment: we have found in Buffalo on Sundays that many places are closed. Just an FYI -- I'd hate for everyone to be disappointed!

We are in the process of negotiating a good rate with a local hotel that can provide free pickup service at the airport. An announcement will be made in our newsletter once it is selected. Whichever hotel we finally select will be the starting/stopping point of the eating tour.

May I suggest that you stay at one of the motels at exit 49 of the thruway. Conveniant to the airport, Buffalo, the Falls and Rochester. Motels flank both sides of the exit on Rt 78 (Transit Rd), very clean and reasonable. There's even a Ted's a couple blocks north on Transit Rd.

Sounds like a fun time. Though I go to Buffalo often, and still haven't exhausted the culinary treasures there, I can't swing these dates. I've only been to Rochester twice, and would love to try Dinosaur.

Did you decide on your ice cream/candy stop? Maybe Parkside on Main St.?

Oh yeah, if you all get together on the Friday before the tour, consider one of those delectable Buffalo fish fries!

Afraid not, LawnGylander. If I remember correctly, the ticket includes the round trip bus ride to Rochester, three of the meals, and a Roadfood.com polo shirt. BTW, welcome to Roadfood.

I have a couple of questions that came to mind as I look ahead to the upcoming tour here in Buffalo. I have never been on an official tour before and so don't know the territory, to quote from "The Music Man." Please remember that there are no dumb questions, just misguided questioners (unless I am the one to prove that statement wrong). Anyway, this is what I was wondering:

Do you all ever have any get-togethers on the night before the tour? I don't mean to hijack the official tour but would be glad to see anyone who arrives early enough on Friday to try some other place to eat. The options are endless: Pizza Hut, Papa John's, ... sorry, I must have them on the brain from some shilling messages over on the Pizza area. Seriously, if anyone has any interest in doing something Friday, I'd be glad to find someplace memorable. It might take some thinking because the tour has all the basic food groups covered, but there are places to eat at. If the RF team has plans for Friday and is looking for people, I would be glad to be in.
Does the RF team let local TV stations and newspapers know about the tour? Buffalo is at heart a small town, and I imagine the news would want to cover an event where people want to come here for something unique (as opposed to all the dissing about snow and bad weather, as if the rest of the country never had weather issues). The coverage won't be the same as the NY Times but would show an interest, I imagine.

Planning to visit presidential sites in the Buffalo area(Millard Fillmore's House, statues of Cleveland and Fillmore, site of T.R's inauguration, site of McKinley's assasination and the park on the American side of Niagra. May finally visit the daredevil museum and take the Maid of the Mist Voyage on the Canadian side(yes I have my passport). Looking forward to a lot of good roadfood.
