My dad drove a sausage/cold cut delivery truck for many years. Part of his route was into the Calif. gold country, Mariposa. Occasionally he'd bring home a 6-pack of Saspirilla from a market there. It was always a big treat. He'd also get Horehound candy there too.

Huge difference between White Birch Beer and Root Beer, the White Birch Beer I grew up on was from Foxon Park, it is clear and has no resemblance to Root Beer, they also make very good Root Beer but in no way does the flavor profile of either match.

What is this flavor? I was in Target the other week and they had this and it was made with real sugar. Is it in the root beer, cream, birch beer family? It was under their Archer Farms name.

I sure hope our Targets here around SW Ohio and environs have it - I used to drink as a kid and have not had it in decades. It is wonderful flavor. Thanks for the tip!!!

I'm now a regular at Village Candy in Sewickley, PA, about 10 miles outside of Pittsburgh. All the regional root beers, birch beers, sarsaparillas, ginger beers, fruit sodas, etc. that you could possibly handle and then some. The stock tends to rotate, so it's always a new adventure to see what you're gonna find there. But one thing's for sure...it never disappoints. I'm actually drinking a Sarsaparilla from Columbia Soda Works (Columbia, CA) right now, and it is delicious!

When I was younger, and my family used to hit a certain drive-in on Saturday summer nights, I always got a glass or two of their draft birch beer. Gosh, that was really good stuff. Never had it's like since.

It's like root beer, but has a more sweet, fruity flavour plus there's a hint of aniseed/licorice in it. I used to drink it back home to make up for the lack of root beer! :)

Thanks so much for explaining the distinction between sarsapilla and root beer. Do you, or anyone else, know the difference between birch beer and root beer?

I actually didn't notice much of a taste difference between root beer and birch beer, they taste very similar, birch beer possibly being a little sharper though. I've only tried it once though and I think it was Boylan's I had, it was very good though.

I remember getting it at Boot Hill in Dodge City, KS. and at Buckskin Joe's near Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado. It tasted a lot like root beer but with a licorice note. I'm thinking that there is some sassafrass root and sasparilla root in the mix somewhere. I haven't been able to find it here in AK, though.

any major manufacturer out there that make sasparilla haven't had it since a kid. Subway was new then and had it.

One thing...it's a very old flavor...late 1800's.....it was my grandfather's favorite in the 1940's
