The chicken joint in Charlottesville is the Wayside Takeout. There's also a phenomenal pancake house there, right on 29N business, across from the Barrack's Road shopping center.

If you're going to be in Charlottesville (I may be too late, I recognize), also visit Lynchburg (I work at a college there), and check out our local delicacies. Great roadfood stops here include Silver Pig NC Style BBQ (Madison Heights on 29) and DRUM ROLL PLEASE, Moore's Country Store on Rt. 460 (headed toward Farmville from LYH). If you like spicy, try their chili dogs (I can't eat fewer than three at a time) and their cheeseburgers. My Lawd.

Here here for Croaker Spot too, in Richmond. Jamaica House near VCU also has solid curry and jerk (not as spicy as it needs to be, but tasty).

If you had only one meal in Asheville I would recommend Tupelo Honey, and if two the Early Girl.

Wanna take my daughter with you????

I'll get the name of the places in Charlottsville from our cousin that lives there and knows where we ate. The campus there is GEORGEOUS - I tried to get him to adopt our daughter so she could go there. We were there several years ago and she wasn't with us and we didn't see the dorms but beautiful place. And if you get a chance, definitely go over to King Family Vineyards - it's a destination for even families - they have polo fields along with the winery so it's just a beautiful place. And of course you have to see Monticello.

I'll have to go back to the Mid-atlantic trip and find the restaurants but we ate at some wonderful places.

My daughter LOVED University of Maryland - she was doing one of the leadership camps there when we did our vacation up there. I didn't think it was that great but she did. Depends on what you are looking for and planning on studying though. She's looking for civil engineering programs.

I am starting a long 10-day college search trip with my daughter and looking for best recommendations for breakfast, lunch and dinner along the way.

We start from Nashville, end up in Charlottesville at the end of Day 1. Day 2 takes us into Maryland and on to Chestertown, MD. Day 3 is in Baltimore, followed by a Saturday/Sunday in Washington. On to Fredericksburg and Richmond. From Richmond to Williamsburg, then on to Chapel Hill. After Chapel Hill, it's to Greensboro, then ending up in Asheville.

Lots of cities, lots of colleges, plenty of opportunity to sample some great roadfood.

Open to suggestions!! Thanks in advance.

Two quick Richmond, Virginia things:

(1) A similar inquiry was responded to here and at almost this exact same time last year.

(2) And in that above hyperlinked thread, I couldn't recommend more Richmond, Virginia's Croaker Spot restaurant if visiting nearby Virginia Commonwealth University and wanderingjew's beloved Freckles restaurant (touted here) if touring nearby University of Richmond. (UR's campus should be looked at regardless as to whether you're considering this school or not as it's just gorgeous and has frequently been used for film and or television shoots to echo that "Ivy League look.")
