Ellen and Marlene,

Thank you so much for this report and in particular the details about Joey's Barbeque. I was in Ontario for a couple of days last week on a business trip to Southern California. I did not have a lot of time for visiting RF places but did get to Joey's one night. I went to the one on Foothills Boulevard closer to Ontario, not the one that you two went to. (It had a sign "Now Open," making me think it's a new location). The service was extremely friendly, and the food was great. I was not super hungry and so ordered a lunch portion of baby back ribs with the homemade potato chips and barbeque beans. All were very good. Having ordered a small meal because I was not very hungry, I decided to have dessert. The bread pudding was outstanding - very tasty and a good size portion that I could not finish. Thanks again for the recommendation - it made for some good eating during my hectic trip. (And the two stops at In-N-Out did not hurt either).

Robin Rose's raspberry chocolate truffle will always be the taste/flavor/richness I try to find. It's the brass ring that no one else has ever reached. Ummmmmm

If possible, I'd like to join the trek to Handel's in Upland, too!

My favorite no-longer-here ice cream parlor is Robin Rose. It used be across the street from the Rose Cafe in Venice, CA. Their ice cream was the richest, most intense I've ever had (their signature flavor was raspberry chocolate truffle, and they had to sue Baskin Robbins when they came out with a rip-off flavor). Sigh!

Hi Mr. Chips,

Next time that you're in Upland I might be able to get away from work and meet you for a meal. I'd like that and I'd hope that Jack could join us.

We didn't dislike Fosselman's. We just didn't think it was out of the ordinary taste wise.

I also love the high butterfat home churned ice cream. We used to have a place in Venice called Robin Rose and that was the end all ice cream ever with both taste and richness.

Too bad the rents are too high in the Los Angeles area to let the little, wonderful, Mom and Pop type of winning places survive.

If you and the misses are back at Fosselman's I'd be happy to return for another flavor!

I truly enjoyed your reports, Marlene and Ellen. Sorry you did not like Fosselman's but I will admit that I claim no special knowledge of ice cream. My personal favorites are Oregon brands Tillamook and Umqua, high butterfat wonderfully rich and very local. I enjoyed Upland a great deal because of Engine Captain and hope someday to return to the area.

Most of the italian Ice Cream Parlors here in Germany sell one Ball of Ice Cream for 1,- Euro, ******* rip-of merchants!

In my childhood, in the 1960s, a ball of icecream was -.10 Pfennig (5 Euro Cents)

I also had the taro flavor on top of rocky road.

Who are they trying to fool? The taro tasted just like coconut but it was a purple runza kind of color.

I love Rocky Road but this didn't do it for me. The flavor was not pronounced.

The place was cute in an old fashion sort of way and I'm glad that I tried it but it won't be a destination place any time soon.

I thought it funny that their other specialty was salt water taffy with Ellen coming all the way from Atlantic City.

I had planned to take a couple of quarts home with me. I even planned ahead and brought a cooler! However there was no need to buy so-so ice cream. I can buy Breyer's for that.

I don't know if I'm in the minority but I still find that Baskin Robbins is my favorite for flavor and texture.

With the last lick of our ice cream our duo dining for the day was over.

Spending a day with Ellen is a lot of fun and I look forward to doing it again.

And NOW for our FINAL pit stop of the DAY :
FOSSELMAN'S ice cream in Allhambra ...
since 1919 !!

One thing Marlene and I both learned was that just cause a joint has been around 4-ever, does'nt mean we are going to LIKE it!!!
In THIS case, Fosselman's ice cream did'nt really do anything much for us... my choc. flavor had very LITTLE "chocolately" flavor!!

We did'nt even really care much for the way the ice cream looked in the barrels, but we were already there, so we got some anyway...

I know you really enjoyed Fosselman's , MR. CHIPS, and we respect your opinion, of course...
I believe you tried the TARO flavor?!?
Fosselman's may be best for those "exotic " flavors, as they supply a lot to the local authentic Asian restaurants , including nearby Monterey Park...

I asked if the hot fudge was HOMEMADE and it was NOT...
so it was not even close to the bittersweet, sticky homemade hot fudge at HERRELL'S ice cream in NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts (visited in May 2009).
