The only regional variation that comes to mind that they missed is the cheeseburger subs found mostly in and around Harrisburg PA.

Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (1bbqboy)

NYPIzzaNut

I guess it is a matter of upbringing, eh?

I was raised eating pizza weekly and sometimes daily in Yonkers.

Where did you grow up eating burgers?

we ate burgers out once a week, mexican food out once a week, and chicken or pot roast on
sundays. kansas city.
Pizza was a high schoolfriday night thing.

Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (enginecapt)

NYPIzzaNut

Where did you grow up eating burgers?

Where they put mustard on them.
Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (allyk)

This was lots of fun to check out--thanks for posting. I was glad to see the article included "slugburgers", thought I've never heard them referred to by this term. I grew up in Decatur, Alabama, home of C.F. Penn's, which has served up this kind of burger since 1927. I love these things! They are a guilty pleasure. If you ever pass through Decatur, stop by. Be sure to order yours "extra brown, all the way". "All the way" is mustard and onions. You can ask for ketchup, but then it's not "all the way". Pickles are available if you want them. Ketchup and cayenne pepper are on the counters, and if you want to eat a Pennburger like a true native, add a liberal sprinkling of cayenne and wash it down with cold milk. I'm a native, but I go easy on the cayenne and wash mine down with a cold Pepsi (no Coke products served here). I always order mine with with cheese. Don't forget your Mylanta or you will be sorry! If you are really brave, go ahead and order 2 burgers. Other nearby establishments serving this style of Burger are Dub's Burgers in Athens, Alabama, which serves them up with sweet and tangy vinegar slaw similar like North Alabama bbq stands offer, and Nesmith's in Moulton, AL, though I heard a rumor Nesmith's may be closed (I no longer live in the area). The author of the above article suggested mapping out a Slugburger Trail. Sounds good to me. I will be the first to sign up if you RF decides to sponsor a tour!

Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (NYPIzzaNut)

Ah yes I must hasten to add chili and oyster po' boys!!
Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (NYPIzzaNut)

I only crave great pizza. If it is a pale shadow of what pizza should be I will opt for something else.

I could easily live on steaks and brisket and ribs and good Vietnamese chow.
Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (mayor al)

SoCal Mainly, but I did put in 5 years on the Mass. North Shore,4 years in "Way Upstate NY", and 6 years in Central Jersey (Ocean County). I learned out to make Maple Sryup and How to shovel Snow while teaching and in Grad School in Oswego NY! I also learned that New Jersey has some very empty areas that should probably remain empty until long after Death Valley is overbuilt ! Never did build a craving for Pizza ! I don't dislike it, I just don't chase it the way I do good Steaks, or BBQ, or even Burgers ! The tenth choice would be made while driving thru Rhode Island where, everyone knows, no edible Burgers are produced!

PS, The linked story is a fun read. It is amazing how many ways onions can be used on/in a Burger !
Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (billyboy)

I am always ready for a great pizza!

Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (NYPIzzaNut)

Not me - I am ready for a great pizza.
Re:Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (billyboy)

Thanks for that link, divefl!! AHT, Serious Eats and Slice really put out some great info and lists. They did one that managed to define 20-30 different regional styles of pizza a while back. Man, I really want a hamburger right now!

Burger Encyclopedia - NY Slant (divefl)

A hamburger today's take on burger styles and regional burgers.

http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2009/09/a-guide-to-glossary-of-regional-american-burger-cheeseburger-styles-and-cooking-methods.html?ref=se-bb2
