hmm. after posting the above, i went to one of the local news sites...

what did i find? an article about utz's - saying that, pending regulatory approval, they're going to be bought by snyders of hanover.

'supposedly' no changes will be made - all ops centers will remain open. hmmph - yeah, for maybe 6-9 months. and then they'll start dropping products and employees.

No, b/c it's 11.49 for 3 large bags (I think 8oz each). I ordered a total of 6 bags, regular and 2 BBQ. Plus shipping the grand total was 32.

When we lived in Chambersburg, we used to buy Gibble's potato chips. They are fried in lard and they are delicious. To my great delight, Publix here in Florida has started carrying these (at least the one in Nokomis does). They are as good as we remembered. Not heavy at all, they are our favorites with just about everything. We used to buy Utz's (grandma Utz's) but they were kinda heavy and greasy.

why do i think there will be changes?

because EVERY time one company buys another, SOMETHING goes by the wayside. what usually goes is product that the company that is absorbed has that duplicates what the purchasing company has. snyders of hanover has chips already.

if the actual products aren't discontinued, then the recipe's will be changed - which is just about the same thing, in the long run.

That's interesting. Snyder's brand stuff is sold widely in SW Ohio ... mainly pretzels. (I've also seen some Husman's style chip bags at the store that are branded Snyder's - they seem to be partnered.) Conceivably once this goes through those lard chips could be special ordered here.

What's wrong with Snyder's? I love them...they're great. What makes you think they'll change anything. They're both located in Hanover, PA (within 2 miles of one another) and both produce terrific products. Hopefully, if anything, it'll further spread the Utz brand...as Snyder's of Hanover has a bigger distribution.

Reading a review in the Cinci Enquirer by Polly Campbell about duck lard based french fries got me wondering: are there any brands of potato chips fried in lard that are available in Ohio (preferably SW Ohio)? The food industry has been on a campaign of ethnic cleansing against using animal fats in deep frying for the last 20+ years, so I assume that this would practically be a novelty item and would require a signed cardiologist's release form for purchase.

You see, I'm not as obese as I'd like. I figure that Eric Cartman has a source of lard potato chips to account for his svelte figure.

Seriously, this would be a very cool *occasional* treat. Thanks for any leads.
