I've had two this past decade, umbilical and inguinal on separate occasions. In and out of hospital same day compared to when I was 11 years old for another inguinal hernia when they kept you in the hospital nearly a week. Good luck on your surgery.
Re:Irritable bowel syndrome (Mosca)

 Actually....

It turns out that 3 ER doctors all missed the hernia on the cat scan, the one that I felt myself by palpitating my belly. A bit of bowel was getting trapped and strangulated, causing the symptoms that are identical to IBS. I have a surgery appt on Monday to repair the hernia.

So I don't like having the surgery, but I do like not having pain, and I'm glad I don't have that pain as a chronic condition.
Re:Irritable bowel syndrome (jenniferhelen)

IBS is stressful not only for the patient but also for the near and dear ones of the patient. But that does not mean that there are no solutions fro it. I too went through so much for my father who is an IBS patient. We as a family did some research and came across caring.com which helped us a lot. When I press on it, it hurts... and then it pushes in, and is soft. Some research on the internet says, "epigastric hernia". This is right near where I had my incision for my nephrectomy. My guess is that something tore in there.

I have an appointment Monday morning to have my doc look at it.
Re:Irritable bowel syndrome (Cosmos)

 I have irritable boss syndrome..
Re:Irritable bowel syndrome (joclyn)

definitely agree with looking into celiac's as the real cause of the problems.

although, if it's coming/going (rather than being a daily thing), it probably is ibd and, if that's the case, you need to keep aware of what you are eating that is setting it off and then avoid that/those foods.

Re:Irritable bowel syndrome (surrycounty)

My problems with IBS started in the summer of 2008, and continually got worse, which led to a colonoscopy in September ( my second one in thirteen months... grrrrr!! ) After giving me the IBS diagnosis, my doctor told me that there's no cure, only control, and that I'd have to take a couple of Imodium gelcaps every single day until I kick the bucket. Fortunately for my budget, I found Walgreen's store brand equivalent, which costs about two bucks less for 24 gelcaps than Imodium and works just as well.

Re:Irritable bowel syndrome (mbrookes)

If you have not been tested for Celiac disease, ask you doctor about it. Many cases of Celiac have been misdiagnosed as IBS. It's at least worth a try, because Celiac is easily controlled, but can mimic IBS if not under control.

Irritable bowel syndrome (Mosca)

Son of a gun, this has been laying me low over the past year or so.

I'll go months without any problems, and then one morning, I'll wake up with gurgle stomach; then around lunchtime, the cramping starts. At that point, I'll take hyocine and it will subside, or it will ignore whatever I do and become so painful I have to go to the hospital; last night, it took a shot of Dilaud and Zofran to make it go away. A few hours later, it started up again, I took hyocine and percocet and it went away again, I slept all night and now there is just a hint of cramping.

Anyone else have this? From my research there is no cure, only control.
