Chicago's Leo's Coney Island. (Russ Jackson)

For those of you who will never have a Detroit Style Coney I will continue to pray for you each night. They say the Coney Dog was invented there. While many great Hot Dogs can be found. I have yet to find someone that does not love them. Made properly it ranks right up there with the perfect steak. For the life of me I just don't understand why they havent branched out beyond Michigan. Leo's moving to Chicago is a great thing. However when places start growing they usually diminish in quality and money becomes the driving force and the product becomes something different. I hope they stand true to the original. For those of you who have never had a Detroit Coney it is your loss. On this Video of Man Vs Food you can see the great dog assembled by the originators of the Coney. Lafayette and American Coney in Detroit. The Video is about 8 minutes long and the Coney part is right at the start. After looking at these two Dogs tell us what you think. ...Russ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLA_Xfoq8ZU

Re:Now open. On the other hand when the novelty passes.....afterall Nathan's bit the dust here.

Nathans has in my opinion a poor tasting Hot Dog. If Leo's uses a Koegel or some other quality Michigan natural casing Hot Dog there is no way they fail. Vienna Beef Hot Dogs are good but not in the same Zip Code of a Michigan Hot Dog. Also if Leo's is smart they will put a Chicago Style on the menu as well...I am waiting for the hands on reviews of Leo's...Russ

Russ,

Leo's uses a Koegel's, which I am dying to try. They also offer a Chicago Hot Dog. It's tough comparing a Vienna or Nathan's to a Koegel. Koegel's are beef/pork franks with a milder flavor and a different spicing. Nathan's in my opinion is a very good dog, but very garlicky. Maybe too much so. Vienna is good, but milder than what I'm used to in a beef dog. My preference for a beef dog falls somewhere in the middle.

Buddy,

I don't know what year, but Nathan's did open up a franchise in Chicago and it failed miserably. Nathan's are hit or miss. Some use a griddle and a natural casing frank; others use a skinless dog and prepare it on a roller grill. My guess as to why Nathan's failed is that a Nathan's tastes very different from what Chicagoans are used to.
Re:Now open.
