As far as copyright issues - they'd have to compete as well with the mini Pizza King chain (3 restaurants) in Delaware too.

Having grown up in the Springfield-Dayton area of Ohio in the 60's and 70's, I was an old Pizza King fan. I was always a fan of their thin crust pizza. One of their signatures was adding salt to the bottom of the pie, and as one of the previous threads stated, it seemed that the shredded or minced their toppings. I disticntly recall their sausage being finely ground along with their mushrooms. It was a different taste.

I had a Pizza the last time I was up there in 2008, and ordered a sausage pie. The thing that struck me was how they now had large quarter-sized chunks of sausage. It was actually pretty good!

I've passed by what seems like a thousand Pizza King outlets in my years of exploring Indiana's back roads and small towns, but I've never eaten at one. From one of those two websites, I've learned that there's a Pizza King in Demotte IN, less than ninety minutes from my place. Maybe I'll make a short roadtrip soon and check it out for myself. I've heard that PK's pizza is very similar to that of their Lafayette-based competitor Arni's; if that's true, then I sure won't be expecting much.

The main differences that I can see is that PizzaKing/Muncie ships their pies via Fed -Ex. Seems people like the pies enough to pay the freight charge.

The other PizzaKing proudly claim and show that their pizzas are kid approved and delivers their sodas and stuff with a toy train. As much as I love model railroads, I think this is a big clue about what to expect. There is a railroad theme that they use and I cannot see a reasonable connection between them.
The menu shows kid photos along with a shot of a mother holding a toddler. No thanks. Do not take a date here.....
I also notice that they shred their pepperoni. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. It would cause a different mouth feel. Maybe it is so the children don't choke on the shape or that the grandparents who take them don't have to use their teeth...
I am going to guess that both pies have a sauce that is sweet as opposed to savory.
As a end-crust kind of guy, (Pepe's) I think that toppings to the end is fine and unique to the region.

There have been many discussions of Pizza King here in the past. Two differences are they chop up the toppings and spread them "all the way out to the edge." What they are best known for is offering barbeque sauce instead of plain tomato sauce. And I think I read somewhere that they only use Provolone cheese.

They are different.

Back to the original question. Having been born and raised in Muncie, and having gone to school in West Lafayette, I do not remember a difference. But the last time I was in Muncie the one I went to was using one of those evil conveyor belt ovens. Boo!

its because the original pizza king was controlled by two brothers, each of which wanted to be boss. So they split the state and each brother used the name of Pizza King in the name of his business. But because they didn't protect the name rights well enough outside business started using the name Pizza King as well. And by the time they decided to protect the name and fight its use by outside companies it became too expensive a proposition.

When I saw that there were two companies I was wondering if one would sue the other due to copyright issues. But I guess not since the two companies are run by two brothers! (For the record I have been to the Muncie-based Pizza King--or should I say eastern one?--I ate at the Richmond location at 2916 E. National Road back in 2004.)

Hey,

I have noticed more than one site for the Pizza King chain of restaurants in Indiana:

www.pizzakinginc.com - the rest of Indiana (headquartered in Lafayette)

I have gone to the first (Muncie-based) site, and in my travels in Indiana saw some Pizza King restaurants not listed on said site. So with the advent of the second (Lafayette-based) site, my questions were answered, except one. How come there are two different companies?
