Portland would make it accessible to us west coasters
and kirk, welcome.
KC and area would be interesting too.

Kansas City could be a redoux of Calvin Trillin's famous mid 70s Playboy article and hit Arthur Bryants (which he called the Worlds Greatest Resaurant), Jess & Jims, or, one of my personal favorites, Jack Stack in Martin City. There are a bunch of others there, and you won't find a cheaper venue, nor one more in the heart of the country. I'd love to have a BBQ for the group, if it weren't just a tad too far from home.

Many of the foregoing are great places to go, and I would gladly go there.

For my money, I would like to see the following, in no particular order. These could build on the existing eating tours:
Atlanta, GA (including Savannah and Mrs. Wilkes would be a bonus)
St. Louis
Milwaukee, Chicago (really, this seems too obvious, but all the more reason to go)
Portland
Texas--but not for BBQ, but for Tex-Mex or something similar.

Portland and the oregon coast...
On the oregon coast I would go to Tidal Raves in Depot Bay OR, They have a wonderful bisque and razor clams that are tastee. Also good chowder places near lincoln city and depoe bay are in my opinon, Sea Hag and Dory Cove. Portland is tough because of the multiple options but I would have to say my favorites include Yoko's (for sushi), Higgins (for everything especially the open faced pastrami sandwich and homemade soups), and Nicolas' (lebanese restaurant especially like their shatta and mezza platters).

Being From Mississippi, I can't help but be loyal to the adventure of DELTA food. Food for me, does not only involve the taste senses, but also all of the other senses that meld, muddle, and mix to create those delightful delicacies that bring the great applause of satisfaction and approval. The smells of the surroundings, the texture of the environment, the sights and sounds of the momement, the complete experience of food. Art is not in a box, and food should not be eaten in a metaphoical box of what is limited by taste alone. You can appreciate the Masters of Art, like Rembrandt, and Grandma Moses if you give yourself openly to all of your sences. The same for me applies to FOOD and the experience of FOOD. The Delta has more than just tastes good, she holds a diamond that has yet to be discovered.

Portland!!! It would be just the excuse I need to make the drive down and check up on my daughter who just moved there and is trying to cut the apron strings!! lol

While you're there, make a short drive east on 84 and check out Multnomah Falls, and then head a little bit further east to Cascade Locks and visit the East Wind Drive-in.

Awesome 70 year old drive-in with good food. Not hand-pattied burgers, but still very good. Great fries and milkshakes. Now I want a soft-serve swirl cone!!

The Charleston/Lowcountry excursion should extend north to Georgetown(River Room, Rice Paddy, others), Pawley's Island(Louis') and Murrell's Inlet.(Oliver's Lodge, Lee's Inlet Kitchen, Nance's, Flo's, just about any other place along the main drag)

I'm with the Sundancer: since I'm limited to locations within a day's drive of my home and at reasonably low altitudes, I'd go for the southeastern quadrant of the US. The Mississippi Delta would be interesting, but anywhere in that quadrant would suit me just fine!

Why not Cleveland? Been there many times and they have some GREAT places. Great neighborhood places, great diners, great fish frys and their neighborhoods are so unique. The Flats stands out as a great place to hang and get good food.

I vote for Charleston hands down. Some of the best food on the planet. I vote a strong 2nd choice for Memphis. Either way you can't lose...

I forgot to add make it after the hot/humid summer. Late September on would be OK both CHS or MEM, October being ideal.

Albuquerque has some interesting eating places - couple that with Santa Fe. Also Western Carolina/Asheville.
