I have a number of good people and people-and-pie photos from the event. I have just been too caught up with the real world to upload and post photos here. I will see if I can get them to you in some way. If you get a chance, PM me with your personal email address and I will send them there. If not, I will post on Picassa and you can download from there.

I am sure that Jim and Bobbi aren't sitting around anxiously wondering when I would heap my compliments on top of those already posted, but I will do so, anyway.

Enough cannot be said about the amount of work that the two of them put in to make this event come to be. Further, they open their home to neighbors and strangers; locals and nomadic travelers, alike, with a generosity that is truly hard to find these days. I tried to express my gratitude to each of them while we were still present, but I definitely wanted to reiterate that same sentiment.

For those who wonder about attending any of the meetings or get-togethers, but think that they might be a little "clique-y," I think that this event, as much as any other I have attended, makes me know that EVERYONE is welcome, as we all share common bonds with food, travel, and (in most cases) a general love of the lives we lead.

Which, I guess, is all a roundabout way of saying "THANKS!"

Luckily, one of my buddies picked up the slack!

My first Smoke Day was one of the highlights of our 10 day Wisconsin vacation. JRPfeff and PieDiva are exceptionally gracious hosts. Hey, they were even happy to have Travelin Man there!

The food was fantastic and the pie selection was something out of my wildest fantasies. PieDiva really outdid herself. And seeing so many old Roadfood friends and meeting new ones was a truly wonderful thing. I can't remember the last time I laughed so much in one day. Thanks again to everyone involved.

The calm before the storm.

Carolina Bob was the first to arrive and the MilwFoodLovers were early birds as well.

Chicagostyledog was nice enough to grill up a batch of Vienna Beef dogs as appetizers.

Irisarbor's husband Frank, Carolina Bob, MFL, Gyp, and ChuckL50 in front of Stricken_detective's unmarked car.

Cousin Johnny, Buffetbuster, CSD, ChiTownDiner (partially hidden), and The Travelin' Man with JRPfeff in the background. I'm not sure but that might be the top of Gyp's head in the foreground.

Bob, JRP, and Quijote. Looks like one of them might need a Rolaids.

The most remarkable sight of the day was the crowd of photographers circling the pie display, flashes from all sides going off so fast it was like a strobe light effect. As I stood there watching the intensity with which these guys were snapping pie photos, I could only liken them to a crowd of paparazzi angling to grab shots of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan on the red carpet.

Except that the pies were better looking and way smarter than either of those two characters.

For a while, there was more gawking than eating. Finally, Pie Diva called out, "Why aren't you guys eating the pies?"

To which Carolina Bob replied, "It's almost like an art museum piece; a beautiful display. It seems sacrilegious to disturb it."

At which point Pie Diva grabbed a handful of knives and pie servers, thrust them into people's hands and said, "EAT!"

No dissenters in that crowd, I can tell you.

Let me join the others in expressing our gratitude and feelings of pure joy to JRPfeff and Pie Diva for another extraordinary event. JRP, you are a fine pit master, a gracious host, and an even better husband. Your deference to Pie Diva's efforts after all the work I know you put in on the meat shows a guy with a lot of class and a man who knows when to keep his mouth shut in order to preserve his marriage.

Great job guys, no matter what your tool for preparation-smoker, oven, or icebox!

That was indeed a fabulous Smoke Day. Aimee, I love that nickname for JRPfeff-- Señor Smoke! Mouth-watering meats, delicious sides, luscious pies, and great people. Even buffetbuster and the Travelin Man were there.

The "mystery" pies were a lot of fun:

Cane Syrup Shoofly Pie
Momofuku's Crack Pie
Nesselrode Pie
Tar Heel Pie
Bob Andy Pie
Highway Cafe Chess Pie
Colonial Innkeeper's Pie

The biggest surprise for me was the Nesselrode. It looked like cream cheese flecked with pimento, surimi, and green bell pepper, but it was a delightfully creamy pie with candied fruit.
