Hopefully, AJ Bombers vs. Sobelman's will be the premiere episode

Two types of Schlitz. The good one is the old pre-1960's recipe. It has much more of a hops flavor than most and is quite good. The brand is now owned by Pabst which no longer has any physical breweries. All their beers are contracted out. I think distribuation is mainly in the Midwest, primarily Chicago and Milwaukee. Very good beer.

I was so surprised when I had the old Schlitz recently (which I believe was at your suggestion, MFL, at Christies!). I was expecting a Budwiser-esque or Miller-esque type deal (which are not my favorites, too light in flavor for me). But this new-old Schlitz really is good. I say "new-old" because they only recently dusted off the old recipe for production once again, about 2 years ago or so.

There are two varieties of Schlitz being sold right now. The long-neck bottles are the old formula, but if you buy it in cans you are getting the current day tasteless brew that compete with the bland American lagers. Just so everyone understands that...

The Twin Cities was a test city for the old formula before they rolled it out in more places.

A little rain didn't close AJ Bomber's. We ate there on Saturday, with 3 of us ordering the Milwaukee Burger that was featured on Travel TV. It is my new favorite burger.

Yes, the burgers are that good. Get 'em now, before it's impossible to get in there.

We worked our butts of to create this masterpiece, even slow roasting the yellow onions to take the edge off before we caramelize them briefly in Schlitz, yes I said Schlitz. Plus Nueske's bacon AND WI Colby-Jack? Jeez I'm hungry again.

This is a seriously tasty burger. I have had three of them now. The onions are a nice compliment, they don't overpower the taste of the perfectly cooked beef, and the Nueske's bacon gives a great sweet smokiness.

I was a fan of Sobleman's for years, but I think the quality of their burgers has gone down. Do I think AJ Bombers is the best burger in Milwaukee? Perhaps, but my burger tastes fluctuate with my mood. If I want a greasy spoon burger, probably Webbs or Solly's. If I want a burger that has tons of flavor that all melds beautifully, I think I'll drive down to Water Street and hit Bombers (when I don't feel like making my own burgers at home that is).

Warring or not, I think it's great PR for the city. X1, I think that some of the perceived rivalries stem from writers (like me, admittedly) saying that one [insert food item here] is better than another. I get vibes from people thinking, "What does he know? He's from New England and comes to our town, eats one meal at places A and B, and declares that A is the best." Guilty as charged! Chris

AJ Bombers (Joe) and Sobelman's (Dave) have been all over TV news shows and in the newspaper as the competition draws near. It's really fun to see all the interaction between the two, and the excitement of the people of Milwaukee, both in person and on Twitter and Facebook.

Couldn't they substitute Fred's in Burlington for Sobelman's?

I had the exact same reaction when this thread started. As it progressed, and it became evident that the whole "feud" was manufactured by the parties involved, it became obvious why Fred's was not chosen.

On the other hand, I've been to Sobelman's and have to say, they have a darned good Burger. Several of the Milwaukee members of The Contingent have been to AJ Bombers and reported back on it very positively. So, you've got two very good burgers in one great city deserving of some attention, who care if the whole thing is made up? It's freakin' TV! And it's not the Nightly News. Like it or not, entertainment value is more important than 100% truth and honesty on this type of show.

Yeah, they come up with a concept to sell to a network. And its good that they provide a little diversion, get the businesses a little exposure , the area gets shown a little on tv and the producers make some money. Like you said, its television.

Hey guys, It was Google Alerts of AJ Bombers that brought me to this thread. yup, I know X1 and a few others here. Happy just to see the interest in the event. But I have been here before and will likely be back again, now that I am no longer just a lurker.
