One of my friends was sponsoring a happy hour at the show hotel and is a big fan of foo-foo drinks like Mojitos. I guess Mojitos must ride at the top of the list as he wanted Mojitos to be made en masse and using his recipe. He even had a local translate the recipe into Czech for the bartenders.

It was a valiant effort, but I think your cruise ship bartender must have visited Hotel Praja before we got there.
Re:The most overblown drink (SeamusD)

hatteras04

On a cruise once, I went to a "talk" on martini's or something else I can't remember (the only reason i went was for the free samples) and the bartender giving the presentation said the secret is to make really bad mojito's early in the shift. Otherwise, he would be stuck making them the rest of the night and they are a royal pain in the butt to make correctly. So my guess is that there are a lot of bad ones out there to keep more people from ordering them.

I totally believe this. Last time I inquired at a bar if they could make me one, the bartender rolled his eyes, said yes, and made some comment about me being a jerk for ordering one (not maliciously). I asked why, and he said that he'd make me one, and it'd probably be the best one I'd ever had, and when everyone saw me with it, they'd want one too and he'd be making them all night. He was right on both counts. Best one I'd ever had, and I saw several people later that evening drinking them. I guess he hadn't figured out to make bad ones early enough to turn people off of them.
Re:The most overblown drink (ann peeples)

Caffeine Free Diet Coke was the most vile thing I ever drank. My wife saved her Weeki Wachee mermaid coke souvenir plastic container on this trip.

I don't recall a minimum number of people on the drink list. I don't think they would care as I suspect a lot of people leave some since I am sure people do it for the novelty with no expectations of finishing. These four people looked a bit giddy and they weren't half done. They don't cheat on the drinks. You just don't realize how much you're drinking. I could feel it from just the regular glass.
Re:The most overblown drink (MiamiDon)

[looks over at souvenir Hurricane glass from Pat O'Brien's on windowsill]

I wonder whether they require a minimum number of people at a table to allow you to order that thing!
Re:The most overblown drink (fishtaco)

Davydd

Over blown in size or reputation? It's a great drink on a hot summer night. I've never gone in for "popular" drinks or whatever is the latest hot thing, or anything that would make a bartender roll their eyes when ordering it.

I really like bourbon, so on occasion I'll have a Jim Beam with ginger ale (Vernor's if I make it at home) and lemon, in a pint glass.

SpicyCheese, Jager bombs are big around here, and I've been known to do one on occasion. I prefer Jagermeister straight and unchilled though if I'm going to do a shot of something.
Re:The most overblown drink (MetroplexJim)

Routinely, black coffee in the morning, iced tea with lunch and dinner, Evan Williams Black after six. Most anything else is overblown.

That said, there are occasions for beer (beach, golf course, ballgames, pizza joints), Coca Cola, milk, and wine.

The bottom line is to know what you are drinking. In general, "cocktails" are meant in some way or another to disguise what and how much you are drinking. That is an invitation to a headache, and worse.
Re:The most overblown drink (MetroplexJim)

Coffee in the morning, iced tea with lunch and dinner, Evan Williams Black after six. Most anything else is overblown.
Re:The most overblown drink (SpicyCheese)

Anybody hear Lewis Black's routine about Wisconsin drinkers? If you get a chance, listen to it, because it's funny as hell.

But he mentions Brandy Old Fashions and how we're the only people who drink those. Is that true?

Also, Jaegarmeister. We drink a ton of that around here and it's gotten a bit out of control. Everybody's doing Jaegar bombs and whatnot. Is that true in your part of the country?
Re:The most overblown drink (ann peeples)

President Grant was rumored, when he was a general in the army, to drink alot.Others complained to President Lincoln about it.
