Lobster and cockroaches are both of the same phylum, which is pretty high up in the taxonomic rank. The phylum includes over 1 million species, and apparently comprises 80% of all living things.

I suspect that saying that lobsters are "more closely related to cockroaches than any other animal" is inaccurate, and I've found no notable sources supporting that theory. In fact, most references to "lobster cockroaches" via google read "alton brown said..."

So all PETA members are vegans??? I find that hard to swallow. LOL

Since I don't eat shellfish at all, this strikes me as funny.

Lobster, shrimp, crab and other crustaceans are more closely related to cockroaches than any other being on the planet, (ask Alton Brown,) I find it hard to believe that they are advocating not eating them live.

I'm certainly no fan of PETA but I believe that animals being killed for food should be dispatched as quickly and humanely as possible, and I can see how making the shrimp "dance" doesn't exactly accomplish that.

As far as sauteing shrimp or boiling lobster goes, putting either in a freezer for a short period essentially puts them to sleep and they won't feel a thing when they hit the pan or the pot. Or in the lobster's case, when the knife goes into his head.

But it's ok to immerse a live lobster in boiling water in the kitchen. It's ok to subject live shrimp to either freezing en-masse or directly into boiling water. Suppose plant physiologists come up with evidence that plants experience the equivelent of pain when prepared or cooked, will the Vegans/Peta decide not to advocate the consumption of vegetables?

A Sacramento restaurant agreed to stop serving live shrimp after an animal-rights group said the practice was cruel to the shellfish.

And sauteeing them in lemon, butter and white wine isn't?

I once officiated at a wedding in which the groom was an extremely outspoken member of PETA. I briefly considered finding leather vestments, but decided that wearing them would disrupt the service, and the bride was the daughter of parishioners.
