It's a Mexican restaurant now. La Cabana or something like that. Same owners as Casablanca which has great calamari dishes. They don't sell hot dogs.

Maybe we could suggest that they start selling chorizo on a bun. Or maybe a bacon wrapped, Sonora hot dog?

EdSails, were you a Valley Boy? I went to Hamilton. I don't remember playing Valley Schools.

Was the crepe place on Rose near Lincoln? That place was WONDERFUL! Clams and garlic for me, please.

As for Baby Blues I have mixed feelings. Brisket should not be stringy stew.

Well.....sorta. I went to Verdugo Hills in Tujunga, in the Valley League although we were not in the Valley as such. I do confess taking a summer school class at Grant once though, so I guess that makes me an "honorary valley boy".
I am trying to remember what street La Grange Aux Crepes was on. Larry Gelman, the owner, was a great guy who always made you feel like you were dining in his home. Rose sounds right though--I remember parking was horrific, but that's Venice.
Maybe I'll pass on Baby Blues. Too much other good BBQ around!

Hamilton is actually adjacent to a couple very good neighborhoods but there have been some shootings in the last year.

I wonder if I could get anyone to go to a game with me. I'll have to bribe them with mediocre hot dogs!

Shea Stadium opened in 64, I would have been there about 68 or 69. The Mets were my Nephews team, I was a yankee man from birth. ....

I used to work the games way back when as a Lettergirl.
Those were the days! I really might have to look in to this. Much better than sitting at home.

Venice is really interesting. Not very many places where you can walk from a muti-million dollar house to a gang-infested area. And it's nothing new for that area. I do miss my favorite place there---La Grange Aux Crepes. It was delicious! Well, I'll have to at least try Baby Blues sometime.
High School games were fun though. I was in the marching band for all 3 years of high school. We never played Venice though, but our going to games at Van Nuys and playing Marshall and Poly could put us in dicey areas for the games.

I've had beer spilled on me at a couple of ball games by people going for foul balls. It's a good thing I've never been to Shea Stadium or I'd be blaming you. You weren't at the Polo Grounds, were you?

Hey Michael, I remember being at Shea Stadium years ago, I took my wife and nephew. I had a hot dog and beer, someone hit a foul ball, I dropped my hot dog and beer, the ball ended up 6 rows behind me, boy did I get a few looks.....................miss judged that one my a mile.....BillyB

Michael, Michael, Michael, I have my Mountain home in the Blue mountains of Oregon, there is a small town about 16 miles away and every one in that town will tell you a Sawbuck is a Sawbuck made out of wood. I would say the person offering the (Sawbuck as a bet) would have it be his purgative on what the Sawbuck would be. If a person is taking the bet, he should get a better definition of what the bet really is. I would say that "Mayor Al" should be the impartial judge in this matter. I would be happy to send Mayor Al a Cases of Pacific Northwest wine for his impartial decision...................(How can a whole town be wrong and Michael be right).....................BillyB

This is a great story. My 12 year old granddaughter asked me if she could borrow some money from me as she is going to the high school   football game tonight with friends.   I said   "Sure, how much do you want?"   and she said    that she really wanted twenty dollars.............enough for the admission and for the whisker dog contest..

So I said that I would be glad to lend it to her but what in the world was the whisker dog contest.   She told me that her friends had all decided to see who could eat the most hot dogs and then the winner would get treated next week.

I asked her why they called them whisker dogs and she said that by the time they got them , they had been cooked and wrapped so long ago that they had whiskers growing on them.   (Only a group of giggliing 12 year olds could dream this up) She also assured me that she would win for sure!

Sorry about your high school neighborhood. But do go to a high school game if you get the chance. You'll see some really good stuff about America.

It is a fairly old memory now, but a friend, while his kid was a high school football star, took it upon himself to see that good food was served at the games. He took over the chairmanship of the committee (as he says, there was no competition for the job), and upgraded all the food. He raised prices a little, to cover the higher costs, but sold a lot more. He raised a lot of money.

So what if they were your rivals. There's nothing like a high school football game. The fun, the excitement, the pleasure of watching kids and parents cheer on their team. It's pure Americana.
