There are still some county laws in of all places New York state that
prohibit the sale of alcohol between noon and 3 p.m on Good Friday Now catch this,, the hours are based on the Christian belief that Jesus Christ was crucified and died between noon and 3 p.m........... and this is the year 2010.... lol

Now I don't claim to be overly religious, or anything, BUT my advice would be to tread very carefully here. While I am certainly not supporting the idea of no sales between noon and 3PM on Good Friday, the wording used sounds like you are debunking a myth or superstition, or a cult that shouldn't be allowed to exist anymore, especially in this "enlightened year" of 2010. And having a good belly laugh on top of it all...(I know that I am impressed with how much we all have achieved, especially lately.)

Here in Pa, wine and hard liquor are only sold in state run stores.Bars are allowed to sell takeout beer but only two sixpacks at a time.If you want to buy a case you go to the beer distributor. No alcoholic drinks are sold in grocery or convenience stores.

Yeah the liquor laws that vary from location to location are a cultural study in themselves.

there are some strange differences in the 'All-American' Alcohol-culture.

Yep. We are mainly beer (me) and wine (us) drinkers, but the variety of beer is limited, so I usually buy that elsewhere, unless there is something special they are carrying.

With wine, we find the choices bewildering, so we tend to stick with the Woodbridge Cabernet or the Coppola Chianti, both of which seem to be a dollar or two lower than elsewhere.

It's amazing to me how the laws so differ in the different states.
I was in Texas many years ago, going through a Saki phase when I thought I was buying a bottle of wine on a Sunday.

WRONG! It was as if bells and whistles went off when I tried to check out. Saki it turned out had a higher than allowed proof for Sunday enjoyment in Texas. We had beer instead as if it made a difference.

In New Jersey,liquor sales are regulated, and you need a liscense...no Costco's have one!!!!

I've bought liquor at the Wayne NJ Costco. I think the law in NJ limits the amount of stores in a chain that can sell liquor. If I recall correctly, it may be only 3. I think the Edison Costco is another.

I think that if you are standing in your refrigerator, swigging away, that perhaps you are swigging too much!

Yeah the liquor laws that vary from location to location are a cultural study in themselves.
Skipping the 'dry-wet' basic laws...even the sale hours in places where the sales are approved have as many variations as there are hours on the clock-face.
No sunday sales before noon in Indiana (convenience stores) has always been a curious one for me. Do the churchgoers really worry about drunks showing up for services?? AND not only locking the refrigerated areas, but having to draw 'shades' so folks won't SEE the evil Budwisers cans staring out from the frosty storage areas... yeah the laws are funny.

I don't often give California credit for much of my heritage...but the marketing strategy of having the Liquor as the 'entry area' to most major grocery stores seems appropriate to me. Here in the Midwest, we enter to counters filled with veggies and fuit...while in SoCal rows of bottles of Bourbon greet you when you enter to buy a loaf of bread !!!
AND I have even seens stacks of cases of beer between the gas pumps at some Circle K's and AM/PM's there.

Here in Dallas as in California, you do not need a membership to buy wine. The same go's for the pharmacy.
We only have two Costco's in Dallas due to the area's confusing liquor laws.
Many areas of Dallas County are "dry". However, after a county wide vote last week, all area's of Dallas are now, "wet". Finally!
I'm sure we'll see a few more Costco's (and Sam's) opening soon.
As of today, over 2,000 people and companies have applied for liquor licenses.

Costco recently chose to build in Fort Oglethorpe, GA (just over the state line) because Tennessee bans wine sales in grocery stores. Because of this idiot law, Hamilton County and our state miss out on both the commerce and tax revenue. The true spelling of politician consists of only five letters (see above).

It always amazes me that all the states and localities have so many crazy laws about the sale of Beer, Booze & Wine!

I like ours for specialty holiday drinks. I bought several jugs (half gallons?) of eggnog last year. I had to build a cabinet in the garage for them!

Many of the 'discount liquor stores' in the Louisville area have lower prices on much of their inventory. Plus 'Liquor Barn' sells half-gallons and Gallons of various draft beers. Costco does fine with wines and name-brand hard booze, but it's local brands and beers lack variety.
The Costco Liquor outlet is contained in a part of the building NOT directly connected with the rest of the retail outlet. (KY Law) but the beer is in the main store. Beer is Not sold 'cold' though.

I didn't know that about the liquor. We took a membership for a year and for us it wasn't worth it. The pharmacy is supposed to be open to the general public, at least here.

I just learned that in California, Costco has to sell you liquor even though you don't have a membership.

They have great prices on some things while others you could do better elsewhere.

I don't know if this law/rule carries over to other states.

I learned this because of a news spot on TV. This law is not publicized and the news was exposing it.
