We had a Mexican Christmas Dinner at a friends house including Tamales from the Tamale Store in Phoenix. They were very good. They sell 20 different kinds of Tamales PLUS 4 different kinds of Dessert Tamales. They're working on being able to ship but it's not quite ready to go yet.

Around the San Antonio area it's homemade tamales, or you go to Delicious Tamales or one of the other companies in town who make tamales year round and buy several dozen.H.E.B. Grocery Stores sell several flavours of their own making,like cheese and green chili, picadillo, beef,pork and chicken in green sauce.They also sell buenelos,which are fried discs of pastry and covered in sugar and cinammon.

My Christmas tradition on Christmas Day is to cook a pan of beef enchaladas and a pan of chicken enchalada. My family loves it. Also have refried beans and a shredded lettuce and tomato salad. Followed by (usually hours later) strawberry cheesecake and pecan bites.

I've had both the bread pudding and tamales. I think they are both traditional.

Tamales are a big tradition also here in Wickenburg. Some of the ladies I know make sweet tamales with strawberries and tamarind. Kind of a sweet-tart flavor. I make about 5 dozen and give them to my friends as gifts for the holiday.

Sweet tamales are traditional. My favorite are the ones stuffed with pineapple, a traditional Mexican Christmas treat. Fresh made----yum!

My favorite local mom & pop make their dessert tamales with mango. Yum! Along with the other usual fillings like pork, beef, etc., I have seen cream cheese and olives.

Every December here in Phoenix we have a Tamale Festival sponsored by a local Mexican supermarket chain, Food City. The local Hispanic churches and other organizations show off their best tamale artisans. You can stuff your face (and your freezer) with chicken, pork, beef, chile, and shrimp tamales and wash it down with some piping hot champurrado.
The festival was last weekend.

Yup, tamales. Even my favorite Mexican place here in AZ has a sign on the door advertising freshly made tamales (take out) for the holidays.

Tamales are a huge Hispanic tradition. They make them much smaller than what I am accustomed to. In addition for dessert, I suggest tres leache cake. Wonderful.

It's not a specialty food but in Mexican families I know, it's a common Christmas custom for all the women to gather and make tamales.

Are there specialty foods at Christmas for Mexican restaurants?
I know in Santa Fe, NM, there is "Christmas" everyday (ordering red and green chile together, quite common), and also local foods such as biscochitos (cookies), empanadas with pinons and apples.
