I loved their sauerkraut with the corned beef bits in it from the special earlier in the week. The roasted peppers on the combo grinder were the best- i remember in the 80s the space next store was opened as a "to go" area called Shelly's and we would buy those peppers by the container full.

Can't believe it's gone- i was just there before Xmas and the chili dogs were as good as ever. After eating there for 35 years I am really sad to see it go.
Re:Shiek's Sandwich Shop, RIP (BillVol)

But Subway lives on. Only in America.
Re:Shiek's Sandwich Shop, RIP (sk bob)

Shiek's will be missed. Glad to hear it at least the closing wasn't due to the economy, but for a wish to retire.
Re:Shiek's Sandwich Shop, RIP (Foodosaurus)

I lived in Winsted for the first 25 years of my life, minus some time away at college. Torrington is one town South. I've always heard great things about Sheik's, however I had never gone there. I wish I had made it in at least once.

Around the corner from Sheik's on the corner of Main St and North Elm is my favorite Deli. Salerno's Import and Deli. This Mecca of Italian Meats and Crusty Milete's Bread, draws me in each time I venture toward NW Connecticut.
Shiek's Sandwich Shop, RIP (brentk)

Looking at the photo of the hot roast beef sandwich in today's Roadfood Recipe, I was all set to seek out Shiek's on my next trip to Connecticut. I searched the web to find their operating hours and, to my dismay, I came across a newspaper article that the restaurant closed down about a week ago.

http://www.rep-am.com/news/local/535730.txt
