I grew up in the Torrington area and Saturdays were hot dog days at Sheiks. I loved their sauerkraut with the corned beef bits in it from the special earlier in the week. The roasted peppers on the combo grinder were the best- i remember in the 80s the space next store was opened as a "to go" area called Shelly's and we would buy those peppers by the container full.

Can't believe it's gone- i was just there before Xmas and the chili dogs were as good as ever. After eating there for 35 years I am really sad to see it go.

Shiek's will be missed. I missed it when we moved to FL. 3 1/2 yrs ago. great breakfasts & those RB sandwichs.
too bad Marcus closed, good stuff. I remember them talking about closing 10 yrs. ago.
Anybody know why they closed?

I used to go there in the 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000. All their food was great, but the best part was the people who ran the place, in particular Gary Arnold. They made it what it was, a great local place. You could make just about any request and they would do everything they could to accommodate you. I even went to the old Sheik's when they operated out of the Towne Tavern, especially on Saturdays for the hot dog specials...........$.25 hot dogs w/sauerkraut. We used to see who could eat the most. Ah.....to be back in your 20's.

That's too bad. Between this and the closing of the Marcus Dairy Bar, this has been a bad week for Connecticut Roadfood and Michael Stern.

Yes, both are great losses. On the other hand, we did get a new Pepe's and the once-endangered Doogie's seems to be thriving.

Grew up in CT, but never made it to Shiek's. The news about Marcus Dairy is very sad - my grandparents used to live in Danbury and used to go there fairly often. Even went there after a field trip to the dairy. Very sad to see the old places close...

Oh that makes me sad :-( They made a GREAT sandwich, it was truly a terrific local Roadfood joint. Glad to hear it at least the closing wasn't due to the economy, but for a wish to retire.

I lived in Winsted for the first 25 years of my life, minus some time away at college. Torrington is one town South. I've always heard great things about Sheik's, however I had never gone there. I wish I had made it in at least once.

Around the corner from Sheik's on the corner of Main St and North Elm is my favorite Deli. Salerno's Import and Deli. This Mecca of Italian Meats and Crusty Milete's Bread, draws me in each time I venture toward NW Connecticut.

Looking at the photo of the hot roast beef sandwich in today's Roadfood Recipe, I was all set to seek out Shiek's on my next trip to Connecticut. I searched the web to find their operating hours and, to my dismay, I came across a newspaper article that the restaurant closed down about a week ago.
