I grew up in Lewistown Pa and had a whoopie pie almost everyday with lunch while in high school.
The best one I ever ate was, however, in Sturbridge, MA several years ago. Unfortunately that restaurant is no longer in biz.
I now live in Ohio and can only find them at a Giant Eagle store which is a PA based grocery chain.

I was at an Amish wedding this fall and they had Whoopie Pies in the following flavors/varities:

Chocolate
Vanilla
Vanilla with Chocoate Chips
Pumpkin
Spicecake
Red Velvet
Banana
Teaberry (Just like the gum!)

Needless to say, I had to sample a bite of all of them. I shared with my friends who attended the wedding meal. My favorite was Spicecake.

After all the posts, I decided to make whoopie pies today...............the oldest grandchild came home and declared them "awesome". They were fun and easy to make. They charge $1.00 each for them at the grocery bakery so I saved a lot of money!

Have you ever noticed the taste difference between PA and ME whoopie pies? From my experience, the Maine ones have marshmallow mixed into the filling whereas the PA Dutch version is a somehow lightened buttercreme.

Me no likey the Maine version!

They're gobs in Somerset, northeast of Confluence--anybody further east or north?

They are definitely known as Gobs around Confluence, PA which is near Ohiopyle, PA and Fallingwater. I had a pumpkin gob in Confluence during the Pumpkin festival a few years back. Also available as gobs in Garrett County, MD.

I'm sorry, I realize I'm not from Maine but excuse me, shouldn't the state's official dessert be, blueberry pie?
I've been eating Whoopie Pies here in Dallas in one form or another since 1963.
Dear friends of mine from Maine living in Dallas now always make blueberry pie for dessert. Not, Whoopi pie!

I had a dream last night in which I had clear evidence that there was a gap between the whoopie pie zone and the gob zone in which neither was to be found.

I am trying not to be swayed by this dream unless I can remember what that evidence was and confirm it while awake.

Never heard of a Gob,either in my travels to Pa...but whoopie pies are all over eastern Pa...and a treat every trip to Lancaster.....also sold all over Jersey and in most Cracker Barrel restaurants!!!
